MDOT to close both eastbound lanes of I-94 in Ann Arbor this weekend

By Amy Biolchini

Both eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 will be closed to traffic this weekend in Ann Arbor as the Michigan Department of Transportation begins a major reconstruction project on the highway.

The closure begins 10 p.m. Friday and lasts until 5 a.m. Monday from the M-14 split on the west side of Ann Arbor to the Carpenter Road overpass on the east side.

Access to eastbound I-94 from both directions of U.S. 23 will be maintained throughout the project, said Kari Arend, an MDOT spokeswoman.

The posted detour route around the project limits is M-14 and U.S. 23.

As this is the first weekend of the project construction, Arend said MDOT is advising drivers to consider taking an alternate route to the official detour.

The construction project will separately close I-94 in each direction for a total of four weekends.

MDOT has an agreement with its contractor to ensure no construction or closures occur during weekends in which major events are occurring in the Ann Arbor area, including the Ann Arbor Art Fair July 17-20, major holidays, races at the Michigan International Speedway track in Brooklyn, move-in weekend to the University of Michigan at the end of August and home U-M football games.

MDOT appears to go out of its way inconveniencing motorists with these total road closures that happen too frequently. The same can be said for the state police which will shut down major roads for hours to conduct an investigation. Pure Michigan!

94 Eastbound is also closing at Telegraph for the weekend according to the signs on the way home from work. It is going to be a HUGE mess. I wonder how many people will miss their flights at the airport? :(

Wow, this is good to know given my wife and I need to leave tomorrow p.m. from Metro Airport. This will require us to leave earlier.

Oh, how funny, someone is headed west, into the setting sun while the article clearly states that the EAST bound lanes will be closed Oh, how silly! (If 81 Wolverine had said "to Metro Airport..." then it would be true.)

Why? If you're leaving from Metro Airport you are traveling west, not affected.

The fact that people can't find their way around without GPS will only make things worse!

Good thing no rain is expected this weekend. Hopefully, a lot of work can get done. Four total weekend closures, ugh! Those east-west adjancenet surface roads will be a mess. Stay away frm them.

Didn't you know that the speed limit in Michigan is 10 mph faster than the person in front of you?

I hope they add 100 signs in each direction that show the maximum speed allowed.
