Man tries to lure 10-year-old boy into truck with candy

By Cindy Heflin

A man tried to lure a 10-year-old boy waiting at a school bus stop into his truck Thursday morning in Salem Township, Michigan State Police said.

The child was waiting near Six Mile and Currie Road about 8:30 a.m. when the man drove up and tried to convince the boy to get in the truck with an offer of candy, state police said.

Police released this sketch of the suspect in the attempted abduction.

The boy gave police a good description of the man and his truck, but it did not have a license plate attached, police said. A state police forensic artist was able to create a drawing of the suspect from the boy’s description.

The suspect was described as white, about 25 to 35 years old. He had a goatee and black short hair with no bangs. He had tattoos on both arms from the elbow down. He also had number tattoos on his fingers of his right hand. The boy recalled the numbers 1, 2 and 4. Police think he may have had each finger numbered from 1 to 5.

He was wearing a black AC/DC shirt with sleeves pulled up to the elbows.

The truck was believed to be a black, standard-size pickup with tinted side and rear windows. There was red lettering on the driver's side rear quarter panel, behind the rear wheel. It had wood planks in the bed of the truck.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Brighton post of the Michigan State Police at 810-227-1051 or the state police operations desk at 517-241-8000.

With those details I'm sure someone will recognize this pervert and turn him in. It's only a matter of the right person seeing the details. That description and sketch should be spread all over the area including the description of the truck and what the pervert was wearing and his tattoos. Thank God the kid is safe and he is to be commended for giving such great info in detail.

Disgusting... Glad the boy wasn't harmed.

Everybody knows that the best way to lure a person into a van is to use a White Castle snack pack, not candy.

The level of detail of this boy's observations is remarkable for anyone, much less a 10-year-old - most impressive. "He had tattoos on both arms from the elbow down." Unless I am misreading the description, I think it would be clearer (and more accurate) to state that he had tattoos on both forearms, from his elbows to his wrists.

Look, the upper extremity consists of the arm (shoulder to elbow), forearm (elbow to wrist), wrist and hand. If those of you who want to call the forearm the arm, knock yourselves out. No dbh, I prefer the description in the article: '...He had tattoos on both arms from the elbow down..."

Don't worry about it, @TA. I don't care.

@a2citizen, where in the story does it say the boy described the suspect as having any tattoos on his wrists? Are you making the same logical error as @Amanda Zee and assuming the presence of tattoos in a location not described by the boy?

DBH, the kid gave a more precise description than an adult snapping a picture with a cell phone. "...from his elbows to his wrists..." What about tattoos that overlapped his wrists onto his hands? You are misreading the description.

@Amanda Zee, being precise in describing a suspect is not nitpicking, it's optimizing the chances that the description will lead to his identification. You are speculating that he has tattoos on his arms (i.e., from his elbows to his shoulders) whereas the boy's description is limited to his forearms and the fingers of his right hand. There is no information in this article, for example, to indicate that the boy saw the man's left hand and noted an absence of tattoos there, or that he did not see the left hand at all. Precision is the key here, not nitpicking. There is nothing to be lost in being as accurate as possible.

If you want to split hairs here, he actually probably has a full sleeve of tattoos but they were only visible from the elbows down because his shirt sleeves were pushed up. And clearly, if he has tattoos on his fingers, that extends past the wrist. I think the description in the article is enough for most people to understand what he looks like. There's no need to nit-pick.

This boy did very well indeed to remember all of these details. I am so thankful he is safe and I hope and pray this man will be found and kept away from children! Not one more child should face this man and his evil intentions!

If the boy was able to remember that much detail, and give it to the police.....I'm well and truly impressed. Goo for him!

That trick is so played out, this guy has no game. I am glad the kid was smart enough to get a good description and obviously not bite on the candy lies.

Yes,I was going to say (though the situation is indeed not funny), what a cliche! Glad the young child got away!
