Authorities responded at 5:15 p.m. to the river near the Michigan Avenue bridge, where the man was pulled from the water by a member of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office Dive Team after a 30-minute search.
The man, who lives in Ypsilanti, was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
Police said the man lost his footing and went under as he was retrieving something that had fallen into the water.

Thoughts and Prayers to the family of this young man ; but i got a lot of respect for the kid who jumped in the water risking his own life . That's a true American citizen . I talked to him over and over and he was very traumatized . That young man is a true hero in my eyes .

I'm sorry to hear of his death. The river current must still be flowing very strongly from those rains we had earlier. My heart goes out to his family.

I was there when the police showed up. It looked like they did the best they could do! There was Ypsi city and washtenaw co. flying around everywhere (sprinting up and down the river's edge). I'm sorry to hear of the loss.
