Prime suspect in Superior Township shooting surrenders

By Lee Higgins

A man accused of fatally shooting another man after a fight Saturday in Superior Township turned himself in to Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton this afternoon, deputies said.

Larry Louis Hunter, 27, is charged with open murder in the death of Jamar Gardner, said Derrick Jackson, the sheriff department's director of community engagement.

LaShawn Antonio Covington, 18, who is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon in the case, also turned himself in today, Jackson said.

Covington's mother, Margaret Pittman, 35, turned herself in on a felonious assault charge Tuesday. She was arraigned and is being held on 10 percent of $100,000 bond. A pre-trial hearing is set for Feb. 9.

Hunter is accused of shooting Gardner, 30, after a fist-fight outside Sycamore Meadow Apartments in the MacArthur Boulevard neighborhood.

Clayton, along with other officials, took Hunter into custody today on Rawsonville Road near I-94 in Ypsilanti Township.

Hunter agreed to meet them after Clayton and others had been in discussions with Hunter's family, Jackson said.

You can bet alot of people knew what was going on but they either were involved or they were afraid to do anything. My prior post just states that Clayton should not get a big pat on the back when he FINALLY does something that amounts to anything. He still has a town to clean up and is not making much progress that I can see. Under his leadership my friends have been robbed twice and once knjcked unconscious and I will not even go into how I feel about the fired troopers! God Bless all cops and may those who took anothers life repent and serve there time! God Bless the family of Jamar as they face life without him!

I doubt the suspect walked into Washtenaw County jail and said, "I'm here for Mr. Clayton". Why does he get all the credit? How about instead of thanking Mr. Clayton, we thank this worthless citizen in our society for turning himself in.

Is this Larry Hunter the father of little Larry Hunter, age two, who died in the house fire on Fox Street, a few miles from Sycamore Meadows, a few years ago?

MK, I have lived in a Superior Township sub (alone and female) for 25 years and never have had a problem. That complex has issues...and it looks like this one is resolved. Whether the people "live" in the complex or not is immaterial. They congregate there....for whatever reason (drugs).

I just moved to Superior twnshp. I live about a half mile away (Geddes & Prospect) from where this happened. Thanks for keeping us safe. Crime stats say this is a decent area hope this doesn't happen too often!

I should add, I'm not a fan of the "police"...but a fan of "peace" and in this case, peace prevailed.

Well Shumom, what's the old saying "It takes a village?" In other words if anyone knew anything about the suspects or the crime and didn't report it, they are guilty of hurting this "town of Ypsi" that you are concerned about. No one person can make people "man up" and do the right thing, for sure. My concern was harm for this man, who may be a good man who did a bad thing, and the many who live around him and are innocent of all of it. In this case, his arranged surrender was bloodless. Don't be so sure that in, say...Oakland County or Macomb County, that would have been true. The article clearly says this surrender was arranged with the dept. If that's not true, then I'm sure they will retract it.

Oh please Clayton did not do it! Larry turned himself him because down under he has convictions and knows he was wrong and is ready to face those consequences! If Clayton had got ahold of any of these people and prevented the mess I would shake his hand but he has done absolutely nothing to clean up the town of Ypsilanti! It just gets worse!

Thank you, Sheriff Clayton. I continue to admire your work! This arrest was made without bloodshed or danger to anyone else. That's due to your handling of the situation and as a resident of the township, I thank you.
