Man asks to use woman's cell phone for emergency call, then steals her car, Ypsilanti police say
Ypsilanti police say a man approached a woman on South Huron Street Monday, asked to use her cell phone for an emergency call, then grabbed her car keys and stole her car.
The 31-year-old victim's red 1997 Ford Escort was seen traveling west on Woodward Street, a police incident log said.
The woman ran to a neighbor's house to call police because she had given the man her phone, according to a police news release.
The woman was walking to her apartment with groceries about 4 p.m. when the incident occurred in the street's 100 block, the release said.
The man was described as black, 5 feet, 8 inches tall, in his mid-20s, with a thin build. He was wearing blue jeans with striped pockets, a dark T-shirt and a baseball hat, the release said.
