In the days leading up to the Nov. 6 general election, local universities have been encouraging their staffs and students to vote.

"Make sure that you go out and vote," University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman told a group of staffers during a leadership breakfast last week. "Educate yourselves ... go and find out what these ballot proposals are all about; several of them would change the constitution of the state and that's a serious issue."

Coleman also sent a reminder email to students last week.

Meanwhile, EMU is providing students rides to the polls on Tuesday. From 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. vans will shuttle students to Ypsilanti polling locations from Eastern eateries.

Additionally, U-M will host an election night viewing party Tuesday evening from 8:00 p,m. until midnight at the Michigan Union University Club.

"Educate yourselves ... go and find out what these ballot proposals are all about; several of them would change the constitution of the state and that's a serious issue." Kind of figures they'd be pushing an agenda and not just be doing a public service. Are the students handed a cheat sheet to know who they are supposed to vote for as well?

Why do Universities do this? The students who will be the leaders of the US in a few years, should be motivated enough to want to vote, instead they are being treated like "Little Kids". It is really sad to see this when we have less educated young adults in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places, putting their life on the line and trying to vote by absentee ballot which some states, counties and cities might not count! Treat the University students like adults!

Better than actively trying to discourage young voters a la GOP.

@Veracity, jcj likely does care about this country which is also likely WHY he made that remark. You get extra points for paying attention, though.

If you care about this country you would not have made your last comment which I assume refers to an Obama defeat.

You might add to the article that polling places are open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and provide a link to the spot where voters can confirm their polling place.
