Lawyer injured in Monroe car bomb blast is University of Michigan graduate
The victim of a car-bombing in Monroe is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
Erik G. Chappell was released from a hospital in Monroe today, but his sons are hospitalized with what are believed to be serious injuries, the Monroe Evening News reported.
A spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said investigators were poring over the vehicle for clues as to who might have planted the device that detonated Tuesday on a street in Monroe.
The injured boys are believed to be 11 and 13 years old, the Monroe Evening News reported.
The device detonated as the 3 were driving about 5:40 p.m., the newspaper reported. It was believed to have been placed under the passenger side of the vehicle.
The ATF is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for anyone who provides information leading to an arrest.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What a coward to use a bomb without any thought about people not directly involved in their attack. To think they would think themselves clever. It is crime against the Chappell; but it also a crime against all of us. A bomb on the passenger side of the car? Seems in their small minds they were making a point? Can't put them away long enough & no privilages. If they lose their minds so be it they haven't lost much.

While I am not suprised, I am quite shaken by this. The reality of a car bomb going off anywhere where people are going about their usual business is very scary. It's something I honestly believe is coming in the very near future from terrorists. I hope to god the investigation on this produces a suspect very quickly. As well my condolences and prayers to the Chappell family, including the Mother of these children. A quick recovery and the future well being for this family is in my prayers. Justice must be swift and harsh with this kind of incident.

Geez, a car bomb?!? And I swear I recognize Mr. Chappell. I bet he was in some of my classes or something. Best wishes for him and his boys, and I hope they nail whoever did this to him. Anyone who would use a car bomb is a serious danger to all of us.

How scary. I hope Mr. Chappell's boys can recover and that he's OK too. I imagine emotional scars will be even worse. Your family is in our prayers.

The Monroe paper reports he did a lot of divorce cases. Most attorneys will tell you who are engaged in general practice that divorce cases are often the most dangerous to the attorney as the opposing party views the lawyer of the spouse as instrumental in breaking up his or her family. In criminal cases, many times the defendant acknowledges that his/her wrongful conduct caused the charges whereas in divorce the parties often blame legal counsel for the proceedings and they themselves are blameless.

@notnecessary: Right, the fact it was located on a passenger side indicates that someone did not necessarily target the lawyer. A family member may have been targeted, which is more scary. Hope the children recover.

We have no death penalty in michigan .... there'd have to be a federal connection and one of the kids would have to die...so hopefully you aren't wishing someone dies here.
