Fire crews from Pittsfield Township, the city of Ypsilanti and Augusta Township were dispatched to the intersection of Munger and Bemis roads around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for a spill.

The Pittsfield Township Public Safety Department issued a Nixle alert around 6:37 p.m. saying the intersection was closed and that motorists should seek an alternate route while a Hazmat crew investigated the scene and cleaned up the substance.

Pittsfield Fire Chief Sean Gleason said that it appeared to be a grease-like substance that came out of two 55-gallon drums.

This is the third type of incident in that area today, Gleason said.

No other information was immediately available.

7 p.m. update: Crews said they expected the area to be closed for another hour or so.

8 p.m. update: Pittsfield sent another Nixle alert that the intersection has reopened.
