How to behave if you're heading to East Lansing for the U-M v. MSU football game
Bathrooms, not bushes. Trash containers. And forget the pig-roaster if you're tailgating at Spartan Stadium.
Those are some of the rules for the road sent to University of Michigan students as the school prepares for fall break - and the annual football game against Michigan State University.

But as an alum of a certain age - as in, before email made mass communication of rules for activities like where to drink (cocktails stay at the parties, people) - I thought it could be a public service to share them.
After all, the game's in East Lansing this year. And Wolverine fans are quite pumped up after reaching 6-0 this season under a new coach.
So let's look for problem-free visits among the Maize n Blue fans heading into Spartytown.
Here are the official reminders from Laura Blake Jones, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students:
If you are going to the game:
* Be considerate of others. * Monitor how much people are drinking. * Control the noise level. * Be respectful of the police. * Leave your drinks behind when you leave a party. * Use bathrooms, not bushes. * Use trash containers, not the ground. * Make sure those under 21 are not drinking. * Do not walk in the streets with open alcohol. * Do not allow intoxicated people to drive.
And here's a link to the official rules for tailgating at Spartan Stadium. Besides leaving the pig-roaster at home, you won't want to bring a keg or drinking games (or even upholstered furniture).

Since when is AA.com the behavior police relative to M v. MSU football? Leave us fans alone. Do not need AA.com telling me how to behave at an M football game.

They forgot one rule: Be Good Losers since it will be 4 years in a row! Go Spartans!

My advice is simply NOT to go there.

"Use bathrooms, not bushes."....yes it is good to see that they are reminding everyone of the "Red" rule.... Oh wait, that was a building wasn't it?

It is a shame that MSU students weren't told this last year. I remember how they trashed most of campus. They spray painted green on sidewalks, parking complexes, and The Big House. I was sickened the next morning to see all the filth left behind.

Hilarious. Apparently wolverines don't come housebroken and have to be instructed to use a toilet.

The water in east lansing is already green. It isn't like we can make it any worse.

Thank you for the information, references, and perspective. Enjoy your tailgating, drinks, parties, and the game but realize that others, including children and their parents, are not nearly as amused by your obnoxious drunken antics as you are.

Smart Logic, thank you for your reminder about consideration of others. Your words ring true for all events not just football games.
