Heat advisory issued for Ann Arbor area; thunderstorms possible today

By Steve Pepple

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for the Ann Arbor area for today.

The advisory, which is in effect until 8 p.m., says hot and humid conditions will lead to a high heat stress index, creating conditions that can lead to heat related illnesses. The weather service said temperatures in a humid air mass will rise into the low to mid
90s today resulting in heat index values near or exceeding 100 degrees.

"Strenuous outdoor activity could lead to heat injuries such
as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or heat cramps," the weather service advisory said.

People venturing outdoors are advised to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and to drink plenty of water.

The forecast for today calls for a high temperature of 93 degrees, with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and this evening.

In addition, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment has declared today another ozone action day in the Ann Arbor area, the second one in a row.

Pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy range and could cause respiratory problems for sensitive people.
