Get the shovels ready Ann Arbor: Snow is headed our way

The National Weather Service says the Ann Arbor area can expect normal to above-normal snowfall this winter.

If you like snow, you could be in luck. The Ann Arbor area is set to get as much as a couple of inches Thursday, and the weather forecast calls for a chance of snow every day for the next few days.

Meteorologist Amos Dodson with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township said the Ann Arbor Area can expect 1 to 2 inches Thursday night thanks to a weak Alberta clipper system moving in from the northwest.

What’s more, if National Weather Service prognosticators are correct, this winter could shape up to be snowier than normal.

After the storm moves through, lake effect snowfall could bring additional flurries and snow showers every day through Tuesday. Even though Ann Arbor is a long way from Lake Michigan, lake effect snow can still affect us, though we get much less than areas to our west, Dodson said.

As for the rest of the winter, get your shovels ready. The National Weather Service’s long-term forecast says much of southeast Michigan is likely to have normal to above normal precipitation and snowfall.

Interesting that Cancun, site of the 'global warming crisis' conference, is experiencing record cold temperatures, much like Copenhagen did during last year's conference. Maybe we'll return to the 'global cooling crisis' mantra of the '70's...

Yep, snow is headed our way. Just like every winter. No surprise.

The first snow is one of the four best things about living in Michigan (weather related.) The others are: Spring-blooming ornamental trees, and shrubs like forsythia... Warm summer rain showers... Glorious autumn leaves... I love the seasonal changes in Michigan and look forward to each one of them! Hello, Snow!

I loved the snow as a kid but the older I get, the colder I get!! Pregnant this winter so atleast I dont have to worry about freezing my butt off taking the kids sledding!! Sure hope I can get out of the driveway tomorrow with all that snow...

Many area lakes froze last night; the remainder should tonight. This makes three years in a row for earlier than usual freezing; this year's lake freezing is two days ahead of each of the two previous years. Gee. Huge snows in Euroland last week, too.

I LOVE SNOW!!! But seriously, you tell us to "get out the shovels" and then give us the let-down that it's only 1-2 inches... that's not shovel-able.

My dislike for all things Winter is inversely proportional to my kids' love affair with it. It's getting harder and harder pretending I like to take them sledding while I freeze at the top of the hill. I suppose it's all the screams of delight that keeps me taking them back. Now if I can just dodge the snowballs while I try to reach the garage....

Good deal...the city can collect lots of revenue by ticketing people with unplowed walks!

The real questions is: Will they be sounding the tornado sirens as a precautionary measure for this snowstorm?

It appears global warming equals warmer summers and colder winters go figure

My back hurts from watching my wife shovel all that heavy snow. Someone has to keep the couch inside from flying away.

Well, this is refreshing! Comments about snow often tend toward the negative, but most of the comments here are upbeat! Although I do get a bit tired of the snow after a while, there's something fun about it -- especially this time of year. When we moved to Ann Arbor almost 40 years ago, we learned how to downhill ski. That has made all the difference in our enjoyment of winter. (Nowadays, however, it's mostly XC skiing for us.) Enjoy!

1"-2" inches! Better go buy bread and milk there may be shortages! Quick! Get the reporters out to Ace Barnes Hardware and get a story on the run on snow shovels!

I like snow from inside my house with a cup of hot cocoa in hand while watching it come down on the poor guy I hired to scoop it.

@KJMClark I guess that's so but they ultimately voted with their feet and moved to L.A. Berlin was there when he wrote it and Crosby was there when he sang it. We slog in it whilst they romanticized it. Ain't fittin.

Top cat - Crosby grew up in Spokane Washington, which gets a bit more snow than we do! White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin, who was born in Russia (Belarus), and moved to NYC as a kid. They both probably shoveled the stuff and got it down their boots and coats. Really, the snow is what makes battleship gray and Alberta Clippers bearable. I just wish we could get two feet, then it would stay cold enough for it to not melt, and then we'd get about an inch or two a week after that. Enough to have a lot of fun, without breaking everyone's back or the road budgets!

Bing Crosby can sing about this all he wants. I'll bet he never shoveled the stuff or got it down his boots or the back of his neck.
