Fred Veigel continues reign as longest-serving Central Labor Council president

By AnnArbor.com Staff

The Huron Valley Central Labor Council AFL-CIO held its tri-annual election last week and elected the following officials without opposition:

• President — Fred Veigel, IBEW Local 252 • Vice President — Steve Gulick, Iron Workers Local 25 • Vice President — Wesley Prater, IAFF Local 693

• Treasurer — James Vaughn, Heat-Frosted Insulators Local 25 • Recording Secretary — Katie Oppenheim, UMPNC • Trustee — Bonnie Halloran, LEO Local 6244, AFT • Trustee — Dan Marcin, GED Local 2550, AFT • Trustee — Pam Meisel, AFM Local 625 • Sergeant at Arms — Charles Walsh, Sheet Metal Local 80

Veigel, who was previously elected vice president in 1966 and treasurer in 1968, was first elected president in 1969 and is the longest-serving Central Labor Council president in the history of the national AFL-CIO, according to a press release from the organization.

He is the former business manager of IBEW Local 252 and was voted business manager emeritus at the union's March 10 meeting. He also serves as a Washtenaw County road commissioner and Washtenaw County parks commissioner.

Washtenaw County Commissioner Ronnie Peterson, who served 23 years as treasurer of the Central Labor Council, declined to run for another term.

Veigel said the council will sorely miss Peterson's "tireless efforts on behalf of all working people." He said Peterson, a former Ypsilanti City Council member and AFSCME president, has had a distinguished career in both politics and the labor movement.

The Labor Council's jurisdiction covers Washtenaw and Livingston counties. There are 34 locally affiliated unions, representing more than 17,000 members.
