University of Michigan groups' on-campus farmers market debuts Thursday

Many kinds of produce will be available at Thursday's farmers market.

Hey students, hungry for some Michigan-grown apples? Some autumn squash? A little zucchini?

These fruits, veggies and more will be available at the University of Michigan’s first-ever on-campus farmers market held at the Michigan Union Courtyard from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

The MFarmers' Market is the brainchild of the Michigan Student Assembly and the (literal) fruits of labor of U-M’s University Unions.

“We wanted to make fresh local produce available to students,” said U-M senior Monica Sangal, chairwoman of the MSA Health Issues Commission. “If it goes well, we’d like to make it something that happens every year and is really a permanent fixture at the university.”

As of Tuesday, about 450 people had said they were attending the market, according to the group's Facebook event.

Laura Seagram, marketing specialist for University Unions, says that U-M has been receiving a high number of requests for an on-campus farmers market for at least two years.

“Students want to have this sort of thing more available to them, rather then going all the way to the Kerrytown market,” Seagram said. “It gives students another alternative to having the fast food on campus.”

At the event, chefs from U-M catering will demonstrate recipes that are simple and easy enough for students to prepare in their dorm microwaves.

The farms represented at the market will be Lesser Farms and Orchard of Dexter, Goetz Farms of Riga and Todosciuk Farms of Howell.

Farmers from two of the three farms will attend the market to discuss the importance of supporting local farms, Sangal said.

During the farmers market, U-M also will be holding a plant sale with plants provided by the Grazing Field Cooperative.

Another MFarmers' Market has been scheduled for Oct. 6.

We'll see how long it lasts. World changing students are always ready to create change, but they'll soon find out like their Student Assembly leaders that the vast majority of the students have a lot more on their minds than banning bottled water and bringing fresh vegetables to campus for students to buy. Farmers will love hauling in their goodies to an inner courtyard in the Union, and hopefully be able to make enough to pay for the parking on campus.
