Ann Arbor firefighters managed to extinguish a vehicle fire Monday at a gas station on Washtenaw Avenue before the flames put the gas pumps in danger.

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:10 p.m. Monday to the 3000 block of Washtenaw Avenue for a report of a well-involved vehicle fire, officials said. The Buick Rendezvous was about 10 feet away from gas pumps but the flames were contained to the vehicle.

The blaze churned out heavy black smoke and brilliant flames, which were out in about 20 minutes after firefighters arrived on scene. Officials said it took about three minutes for firefighters to arrive on scene.

The vehicle was mostly destroyed and fire officials did not have a damage estimate immediately Monday. The scene was cleared shortly after 3 p.m. Monday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No one was injured in the fire.

Don't blame the owner, if I had a Buick Rendezvous (Breaking Bad) I would of done the same.

@walker... so I guess this answers the age old question on the commercials... "Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick?"

There's a good clip on YouTube of a halon system discharging at a gas station. At some of the older stations, you can see the big red tanks mounted under the canopy.

Well I was there when the fire started, and they are required by law to have fire fighting equipment on site for this kind of situation. Just look at Speedway.

Anyone know if gas stations are required to have a fire extinguisher on hand? Cheaper than opening and staffing another fire station.

I believe they are but somebody has to use them. Today folks just dial 911 and let others get their hands dirty.

You're supposed to turn the car over before you set it on fire. Also, you're supposed to wait for Michigan to win first. Rookies.

@jwally, if the pin on the map is correct they have started selling gas at the synagouge located on Washtenaw and Austin/Devonshire

FYI, there is no gas station in the 2000 block of Washtenaw Ave. The station in the photo appears to be the Marathon in front of Arborland. That would be the 3000 block.

Yup that looks like that Marathon in front of Arborland. Also...the map is WAY off....looks like it went the wrong direction on Washtenaw.

Thanks jwally, it appears the official I spoke to from the AAFD was off by a block. I'll make that change.
