Electrical explosion ignites brush fire in Pittsfield Township

By Cindy Heflin

Pittsfield Township firefighters battled a brush fire along railroad tracks near Textile Road west of State Road Saturday evening.

The fire broke out about 6:45 p.m. when some kind of electrical explosion along power lines in the area ignited vegetation along the tracks, said Pittsfield Fire Commander Sean Gleason. It quickly spread in both directions along the tracks north and south of Textile Road.

Witnesses who heard the explosion and saw smoke and flames called 911, Gleason said. The exact cause has not been determined. It could have been a transformer or circuit breaker or perhaps the power line itself, Gleason said.

DTE was on the scene about 8:15 p.m. trying to shut down the power and start repairs, he said. Firefighters were also still there because a small area where a wire was down was still burning.

The fire extended in various places along the tracks for about 1/8 of a mile, Gleason said. The Saline Fire Department provided assistance. About 15 firefighters battled the blaze. No one was injured.
