Fire destroys home and kills pet dog

By Cindy Heflin

A dog died and a home was destroyed in a fire in Augusta Township overnight, firefighters said.

The fire broke out around midnight Sunday in the 9500 block of Stony Creek Road. Firefighters from Augusta and Pittsfield townships as well as Milan and Saline battled the blaze.

The fire destroyed the one-story ranch home, said Pittsfield Township Fire Chief Sean Gleason.

Firefighters said the family’s dog was found dead at the scene, he said. The residents also had a cat, he said, but Pittsfield firefighters did not know whether the cat survived.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire upon arrival and were on the scene for two to three hours, Gleason said.

The Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted three people at the home with food and clothing.

So sad and makes a second in a month. Wow. Guess I am locking mine up at nite with me. Good luck to the rebuild. Any word on the cause?

I feel terrible for the family, but I sure wish I didn't have to read about an animal dying in the headline while I'm perusing the news-----kind of in the same territory as "ignorance is bliss". I'm sure I'll get bashed but whatever. Again, terribly sorry for the family.

I was listening to the scanner when the call came across for this fire. SO hard to go through for sure. I wish the family well but sorry they have to go through with dealing with the loss of their pets and house. Prayers for the family

Sad story. I wonder if this had anything to do with the never ending fireworks festival MI has been enduring lately? It hasn't rained in a long time and we are peppering the ground with burning embers.

We are friends with this family, and sadly their cat did not make it either. My heart goes out to them. Thankfully they (dad and baby girl) made it out alive.
