An Ypsilanti Township playground structure is closed after a fire damaged the equipment Saturday afternoon.

Ypsilanti Township Fire Department Lieutenant Dave Crescio said a neighbor called the fire in at 3:10 p.m. after spotting smoke coming from Sugarbrook Park at the corner of Andrea and Heather Ridge streets on Ypsilanti Township’s east side.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, Crescio said, woodchips beneath the structure were burning and several plastic slides and climbing areas were melted. He said they had the fire under control around 3:25 p.m.

Crescio said there were no witnesses to what caused the fire but said it was “suspicious in nature.”

He said the fire caused at least $10,000 worth of damage and estimated the entire structure to be worth about $15,000.

“It did some major structural damage to the playground equipment,” he said. “It’s pretty much a loss, they’re going to have to rebuild the majority of that.”

So when might the rebuilding begin? It could be part of a stimulus package.
