Fire causes extensive damage to Ypsilanti Township home

By Cindy Heflin

A house fire in Ypsilanti Township Sunday caused extensive damage to a home and destroyed the attached garage.

Ypsilanti Township Fire Capt. Dave Webb said the residents were not at the home in the 7100 block of Stony Creek Road when someone noticed the fire and reported it at 12:37 p.m.

Firefighters could see a column of smoke rising from the house as they raced toward it, Webb said. Upon arrival, they found the garage engulfed in flames and fire extending into the house.

Fire spread throughout the attic of the home. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 45 minutes, but not before it had caused extensive damage, destroying the garage and burning most of the roof off the house, Webb said.

Damage was estimated at $280,000 to the garage, home and contents. Firefighters suspect an electrical problem may have started the fire, but the cause is being investigated, Webb said.

The Augusta Township Fire Department supplied water from a tanker until firefighters could get a hose line established from a hydrant, Webb said.

Many thanks to the neighbor who brought the cold drinks for the firefighters. They were greatly appreciated. Its nice to know there are still people who will help when they get nothing in return.

Would it be too much to ask when reporting a story where in Ypsilanti Township? Because Augusta Township is mentioned, I would assume south side. But where? Ypsilanti Township is a big place.
