Enjoy winter while you can on the best sledding hills in Ann Arbor

Believe it or not, Daylight Saving Time is only a month away and despite Saturday's perfect conditions for pond hockey, spring will be here before we know it.

For those looking for a conditions update, went sledding today 3/2 and Veteran's is still in good shape. Agree with prior commenter that the big hill is questionable for children. It is very icy and very steep, you could easily loose control and hit something or wipe out badly. In fact there are several "no sledding" signs posted there. However, there is a slightly less steep hill at the opposite end, near near the baseball fields that is about perfect. Right now it is also less icy as well.

Just glad the snow and ice are finally dispearing. Although I was told of a hill off 69 near the Indiana border with a wicked snow hill.

I have seen sledders before school doing that hill. So who knows.

Just for you younger folks, in the 1930's the city blocked off several strets in Ann Arbor for sledding three in particular were 8th street from Liberty to Washington, Division from Pckrdard to Hill and koch from 3rd St. to Main Street...no thru traffic was allowed on those street. Great fun.

Wurster Park hill on W. Madison is a terrific family sledding hill.

Vet's park is a death trap for plastic sleds, and potentially a bit risky for kids. At the bottom of the hill is a line of fence post anchors for the baseball diamond fence, big tubes every 10-15 feet sticking a few inches out of the ground. I don't remember seeing them in previos years, so I don't know if they are a result of recent work or if there was always enough snow packed over them that I just didn't see them before. Last week we went out there and there were about a half dozen shattered sled carcasses strewn about the hill. Seems like a liability to me, and I don't think we'll be running that hill again this season.

When I was in school we used to sled down the hill behind the music school on north campus using trays from the Bursley cafeteria. There's a parking lot at the bottom of that hill now, probably not recommended anymore.

Hunt Park has the most fun sledding with its variety of slopes and angles, so many first-time sledders, and often a pack of dodgem dogs.
