As an alum of E.M.U., I look at the past and present university "movers and shakers" and have but one question: If President Martin were a male, would she be facing this public humiliation?

If she was African Male she would have been gone in nanosecond.

Nope, she would have just been fired.

Nope. As an EMU alum myself, it would probably be encouraged and applauded...

so much nonsense

Is this being blown out of proportion? Are the EMU regents acting like the UVA board of Visitors by trying to grab control and power while embarrassing their president for no good reason? She had an argument with an alumnus while having drinks. The alumus got offended and now they are insinuating that she has a drinking problem and a serious health issue. Something does not sound right. First thing that crossed my mind.

Just read both letters and it seems clear she is in full denial of having alcoholism. In that regard, she may be right or she may be wrong but her letter shows a lack of understanding of the disease. She could easily be the Functioning Alcoholic who can manage their job responsibilities while suffering from the disease - for a while. Eventually, the alcoholic reveals themself and their statements become irrelevant as their actions speak volumes. I wish her humility and honesty. These will help her see the best path.

@NorthsideZak--BTW, congratulations to you! That's no small achievement.

I wish YOU humility. You read two formal letters and "it seems clear" to you that Martin is an alcoholic? In all of the hundreds of "She's a drunk! Off with her head!" comments I've read on these stories today--many of which diagnose Martin and convict her without ever having met the woman--what I have NOT read is the caution not to judge others until and unless you are perfect yourself. Both AA and Christianity preach this. I know because I attended many meetings at AA. Did you assume that I'm an alcoholic? I'm not. My parents were. I went to Al-Anon. Susan Martin may or may not have a drinking problem. It isn't up to us to make that determination. Oh, and about that DUI. Everyone on this board who is not a teetotaler and who has never driven a car after having two beers or a few glasses of wine with dinner, raise your hands. Raise them higher, because I'm not seeing many.

I am an alcoholic. I have been sober 4 years. I read both letters. I would NOT draw this conclusion.

Let's all play internet social workers and discriminantly label people. Have fun before it comes back in your direction.

Let's not jump to conclusions. The board is clearly assuming she has a substance abuse problem based on a recent event. Other that her DWI that she self reported, from 7 years ago, is that enough evidence to label someone an alcoholic? There are plents of people that have a DWI/DUI that just made a idiot decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle that aren't alcoholics.

She's lucky she is not a football coach...she would have been fired.

Only if her record were 8-4 two years in a row.

I wondered the same thing when I got the email. I would like to know what she said and how the alum in question responded.
