Milan schools working to develop new logo
A committee working to develop a new design has been meeting over the summer with Gail Nicklowitz of GN Communications in Ann Arbor, the same graphics artist who designed the new Ypsilanti Community Schools logo.
The new design will cost about $1,000, according to the news report. The district will retain its name: Big Reds.
The district's Board of Education will review designs Sept. 11, according to the news report.

That $1,000 was just burning a hole in their pocket? Couldn't think of something better to spend it on? Why change the logo? Not changing the mascot, no merger, so what would be the valid reason to do so? Lame. Got an extra grand I can burn? I can think of MANY better things to buy.

It's a shame that any singular objection creates the necessity for change in our overly PC environment. Mascots are revered, not ridiculed. They are looked up to as a source of strength and character to emulate. In no way has a mascot ever meant to be demeaning. But when someone gets offended, then everyone thinks change is the only alternative. This is not a perfect world folks. Force change where change is truly needed.

Ethnic caricatures based on tired stereotypes are not exactly what I'd call "reverential".
