Eastbound I-94 closed at Baker Road after semi rollover accident

By Kyle Feldscher

The eastbound lanes of I-94 in Scio Township are expected to be closed for several hours after a semi tractor-trailer rig rolled over Thursday afternoon, spilling 41,000 pounds of cargo on the freeway, the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said.

All three eastbound lanes were closed at the Baker Road exit as of 3 p.m. with all vehicles being directed off the freeway, a dispatcher with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said.

The westbound lanes were not affected by the accident, but gawkers are slowing traffic. Drivers are advised to avoid the area. The truck dumped about 41,000 pounds of its cargo on to the freeway, said Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams. She wasn’t sure what the the materials were, but first reponders were able to gauge the weight of the cargo by a material sheet in the truck, Williams said.

The truck driver was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in stable condition, Williams said.

The truck was on the eastbound I-94 entrance ramp just west of Baker Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it toppled over, a dispatcher said.

Our subdivision is by the intersection of Parker and Jackson and Jackson rd has been backed up for miles from the light at Parker for a few hours now - still backed up as I type this. So I'm assuming that there's still a problem with the highway.

Thats just a bad intersection all around for trucks and cars. with 3 truck stop plaza's there it makes for a horrible section of freeway.

This accident follows another last week at the interchange of 275 and M14 in Wayne County, again, as a tractor-trailer tipped over on the access ramp. Two incidents are well short of a trend, but are a good reminder that Michigan allows higher cargo weight limits than most other states, and that caution around big rigs is always warranted.

question...on the map it shows the accident at the eastbound ramp EAST of Baker Rd; there are two east bound ramps...which one is it?

The accident is at the EB ramp west of Baker Road. I've updated the map to correctly reflect the location.

I don't see any of the of the 41,000 lbs of cargo that was alledgedly spilled. They must mean it had to be off loaded in order to right the truck.
