Dexter schools: Separating athletics, community service departments to save up to $20K

By Danielle Arndt

Dexter Community Schools will return to operating two separate athletics and community services departments, according to an article in the Dexter Leader.

The Leader reported that Sean Burton, executive director of support services at Dexter, proposed restructuring the departments by adding five new positions: an athletics director, community services director, aquatics director, a lead lifeguard and a first steps/preschool specialist.

Burton presented his proposal before the Board of Education Monday night.

It's estimated restructuring the departments will save the district between $15,000 and $20,000.

Dexter’s athletic director, Brett Steele, resigned in April after six months on the job because the district’s vision was to maintain a joint athletics/community services department, according to a previous report.

Someone asked me if this was a ploy to get rid of Sean Burton. I stated that the Dexter Schools and the School Board are ethical and would never do such thing. This was not a tenure issue and if they were unhappy with Mr. Burton they would have dealt with it properly. There is no evidence that Mr. Burton was not performing his responsibilities adequately.
