'BRAve Men of Dexter' identities unveiled when unusual fundraising calendar goes on sale

By Lisa Allmendinger

Dexter Village President Shawn Keough is Mr. March.

And he’s wearing a bra.

Keough is one of a dozen businessmen in the village who agreed to pose for a Relay for Life, American Cancer Society fundraising calendar called The BRAve Men of Dexter, which was photographed and printed in Dexter.

“It’s truly a community effort,” said Patti Christian, a breast cancer survivor who joined the Friends and Family Relay for Life Team last year while undergoing chemotherapy.

June Mann, captain of the team, put the group of about 20 walkers together while serving as a caregiver for her husband, who is battling a form of lymphoma.

The bras worn by the men in the calendar are “art pieces” designed by team members that were originally hung on their tent during this year’s Dexter Relay for Life.

“People wanted to buy them,” Mann said of the unusual décor.

But Mann and Christian had another idea.

They decided to produce a calendar and asked Dexter men to pose wearing the bras.

“People will be shocked at some of the men,” Mann said. “Each one said they’d been affected by cancer in one way or another.”

Each man is wearing a specially decorated bra that range in theme from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan to holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day.

Local photographer Anne Savage agreed to a photo session that placed the men in their unusual attire in 12 different locations throughout the village.

“She did it gratis,” Christian said, adding that local printer Adair Printing offered a discounted rate for the 250-calendar initial run.

Priced at $20 each, all proceeds from the calendars go to the American Cancer Society.

They go on sale Wednesday and can be found at Busch’s of Dexter, Country Market, Dexter Pharmacy, Hackney Hardware, Stucchi’s and Dexter's Pub.

Each is shrink-wrapped so people have to buy the calendar to see who posed for its pages. The 12 different bras are on the back page of the calendar.

“Inside, the mystery men are revealed,” Munn said.

Keough said he had a lot of fun during the photo session. And Mr. March said, “I feel lucky to be in Dexter.”
