Ypsilanti police search for 2 men accused of shooting man in the mouth

By Lee Higgins

Ypsilanti police detectives continue to search for two men they say shot a man in the face, then robbed him in an apartment building hallway on South Grove Street 10 days ago.

Kennyon Roshawn Jackson, 19, and Tory Tovonta Warren, 20, are each charged with assault with intent to murder, armed robbery, and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony, Washtenaw County court records show.

Police say the men met with a 23-year-old Ypsilanti man they know at about 11:50 p.m. July 11 in the 200 block of South Grove. They told the man they were interested in buying some high-end sunglasses, police said.

Without warning, investigators say, Jackson pulled out a gun and fired at least two shots at close range. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the mouth and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and a bullet was removed from his tongue. He remains hospitalized in stable condition, Det. Joe Yuhas said.

Jackson also is charged with carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, discharging a firearm in a building and possessing a firearm while being a felon. State Department of Corrections records show Jackson has prior convictions for possessing cocaine and resisting and obstructing police.

Police said the men may be in the Ypsilanti or Ypsilanti Township area and are considered armed and dangerous.

Warren is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 150 pounds, while Jackson is 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 160 pounds, according to WANTED posters released by police today.

Anyone with information can call Det. Joe Yuhas at (734) 482-9872 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) SPEAK UP.

So, who is paying for this victim's surgery at the hospital? Does anyone actually think he has health insurance? Not likely. All the rest of us who pay for insurance are paying for this kind of medical treatment all around the country through higher premiums, and it is contributing to the escalating costs of health care.

hmm..not really seeing the reason behind your post Sallyxyz?? Should the police have first asked him if he had health insurance?? If he said "no", should the police just left him to die from a bullet to the mouth?? God forbid something like this should ever happen to you or a family member...insurance or not....

A classic case of products of a toxic environment, and commentators who want to project their comfortable idea of how life is on people who are far from that imagination. It's easy to be judgmental, and much harder to be understanding. Ultimately individuals are responsible for their actions. As teenage kids often go, they must learn the hard way from them. Unfortunately, money was the main goal for these people and they were willing to use guns and even shoot someone for it. I've heard stories of people doing robberies for expensive sunglasses and other types of clothing/accessories, but it seems like this was not the main motive. Shooting someone for some sunglasses does not seem like a logical move for a multiple man robbery in an apartment hallway.

When will these young people...minority males wake the freak up and realize violence is NOT the answer? Do they even realize that violence is a guaranteed one way ticket to the prison system?

I agree, nurturing is but one factor. In the end it is still the criminal's own choices and actions which cause problems.

@CC - are you actually suggesting that Kennyon bares some personal responsibility for his actions? Oh, the insanity. You could easily be tossed out of town for even having those thoughts, much less writing them down.

@ ezbngreen just wanted to clerify with you, Kennyon was a great student in junior high. You can't sit here and say they were a sad case. Kennyon was raised correctly but choice a different life. A parent can only do and say so much but at the end a child makes there choices and he is an adult not a child. This is a very sad story for all parties involved. I hope and pray for all. Don't judge before knowing a situation..

"A parent can only do and say so much but at the end a child makes there choices and he is an adult not a child" While there is some truth in that statement, this felon was a criminal while he was legally still in the custody of his legal guardians (I am assuming his parents). What kind of parenting leds to a child (he was 17) being arrested for possesion of coke? There has to be a large amount of blame placed on the family who not only failed him, but the rest of his community, by failing to teach their son right from wrong. I have no way to validate your statement that he was a good student way back in junior high school, but the parents should have known what this kid was doing when he was getting into previous trouble. It is a parents job to know what their kids are doing, know who they are hanging out with, and to know if their kid is committing felonies. Now, due to the failures of his parents and his support system, we the taxpayers are now going to have to pay to incarcerate these two failures for the next couple decades. This felon shot a guy in the mouth for sunglasses. There is no way to defend him and say that is a good person.

Seeing as how probation absconder Jackson was convicted of Controlled Substance-Possess Narcotic/Cocaine < 25 Grams, I wonder if there is more to this story?.... http://mdocweb.state.mi.us/OTIS2/otis2profile.aspx?mdocNumber=756389

Too bad.... The money spent on education stands at approximately 10k per year. These two are going to cost the taxpayers much more for their education while in prison. Sadly MPRI doesn't have a very good track record. My guess is these two were a lost cause when they were going to junior high....
