An Ypsilanti police patrol vehicle, similar to one shown in this file photo, was vandalized Saturday.

Ypsilanti police are searching for a man who caused $1,300 worth of damage to one of their patrol vehicles, which was left unattended while officers chased another suspect on foot at 10:46 p.m. Saturday.

Police were dispatched to the 600 block of Armstrong Drive in Ypsilanti after receiving reports of a large group blocking traffic.

Sgt. Kent Overton said it’s not uncommon in that area for there to be at least 50 or so people hanging around outside any given night. When officers arrived, a 22-year-old man fled and the two officers pursued him on foot.

The man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing, resisting a police officer and destruction of evidence, police said.

Police didn't immediately have any other information about what the man did.

While the officers were away from their vehicle, though, a lone suspect jumped up on the hood of the Ypsilanti Police Department patrol vehicle, Overton said.

“Someone jumped up and down on the hood and smashed the window,” he said.

The windshield of the cruiser was likely kicked in, Overton added.

No one in the crowd would say who was responsible for the vandalism. On Tuesday, Overton said police have a better idea after interviewing subjects in unrelated incidents.

“We think we know who it is now,” he said. “Sooner or later he’ll get rounded up.”

Meanwhile, the patrol car is being repaired and can be expected to be back on the road soon.

There is some uncontrolled prejudice on display in these comments. The story is about two people misbehaving, yet one reading these comments would come away thinking that a riot erupted. Sad. Look up the word prejudice before responding.

Comments like the ones you mention are how AA-ites have always self-reinforced that their criminals are better than the criminal in other places. Its a part of the culture.

I see at least 50 people with nothing better to do. Blocking traffic, If the cars don't stop, maybe a couple will get hit. (maybe more) It's like who cares. I don't think the 22 yr. old was worth the chase. I would have directed traffic out of the area, and let the 50 people do their selves in.

Why on earth are there frequently more than 50 people all hanging out outside here? What is that about? I feel TERRIBLE for the officers; to go out there and try to protect the security and property of those people, then have their car trashed by the very people they're trying to serve, AND no one points out the one who did it. What a terribly thankless job. Those people should not receive any police services. Let them all live their Mad Max lifestyle without sucking services and time away from people working hard.

AA.com should put out a daily police blotter for Armstrong Drive. Can't even go 2 days now without something bad happening there.

"I know after working 10 hours a day I don't have the energy to kick the windows out of a police car." Sounds like you need that 5 hour energy drink. Meth probably works too, and from what I read it has the "crazy" factor to make it all seem normal.

When you're having so much fun that your breaking the windows out of police cars, these have got to be death bed memories. I still remember the guy in 1984 standing on a upside down, on fire police cruiser. "Bubba Helms" I wonder what they were celebrating this time?

Cut off the section 8, and the bridge cards and these people will be to tired from working to cause trouble. I know after working 10 hours a day I don't have the energy to kick the windows out of a police car.

@cinnabar7071 it's not what a person get or don't get because I have seen a lot of rich kids that have a sliver spoon in their mouth do worse . and they have so much money they don't work just pill heads or dope addicts may if they take the sliver spoon out their mouth they will do better

Didn't some Huron students get a slap on the wrist for trashing a patrol car a couple of years back?

It wasn't the duckling kid, it was one of the Pioneer HS students who vandalized Huron High's field by making a doodie on the field and also on a school patrol car, I believe.

The police can hold someone for I think 24 hours without charging them, and it they were there and not blind. Well I'd have some questions. Rewards also work, but it sounds like someone already gave the person up. Snitching amoung the criminal element is very common, I worked in corrections for a minute and can tell you snitching is very popular, almost like cash, or prestige. If something happened I know all about it within hours.

Ah yes. Violating everybody's civil rights will SURELY lead to more cooperation with the police.
