Ypsilanti police seek charges against two men for filing false reports

By Lee Higgins

Ypsilanti police detectives are seeking charges against two men accused of filing false police reports in separate incidents this fall, a police news release said.

Police are seeking charges against an 18-year-old Van Buren Township man who had a gunshot wound to his leg Sept. 4 and lied about how and where the shooting occurred, the release said.

The man originally told police he was at a gas station at 501 E. Michigan Avenue to meet two other people with the intention of purchasing narcotics when one of the people produced a handgun and shot him in the lower leg. Police said the shooting didn't occur in Ypsilanti and was turned over to another jurisdiction to investigate.

In additon, police are seeking charges against a 19-year-old Canton man who they say lied about being the victim of an attempted robbery Oct. 29 in the 800 block of Huron River Drive, the release said.

The man originally claimed he was in his vehicle in a parking lot when a man, possibly armed with a handgun, robbed him, the release said. Detectives obtained video surveillance footage in the area and determined the crime didn't occur as he described, the release said. The man eventually admitted he made it up, police said.

According to the release, Washtenaw County prosecutors are reviewing the cases.
