Ypsilanti officers use stun gun to control man who resisted arrest, had home invasion warrant
Ypsilanti police used a stun gun to control a 19-year-old man who was trespassing and fighting with officers before they arrested him Thursday evening.
Police stated officers responded to a report of a man who was trespassing at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the 200 block of Pearl Street. The man attempted to leave when officers got to the area and then fought with investigators.
He attempted to run away, but officers used a stun gun to stop him and bring him into custody, according to police.
In addition to resisting arrest, the man had a warrant out for his arrest for home invasion, police said.
Police were not immediately available for further comment on the incident.

YPD doesn't use "stun guns." They use Tasers. They are not the same thing, and the terms are not interchangable. The article should be corrected. It is incorrect as written.

This guy was stupid enough to have a warrant out for his arrest and keep committing crimes. Jeesh

The suspect is described as running away. The use of force policy would never allow the officers to shoot a suspect that was running away. Thus, they did not use the Taser instead of shooting him. They used it instead of chasing him, physically subduing him or using a club. There isn't enough information given by the police to be able to tell if it violates their use of force policy. If someone is running away and they are Tasered, there momentum will cause them to hit the ground very hard, often causing head trauma. Thus, I was told by a YPD lieutenant that it was their policy not to Taser a suspect who was fleeing. The use of the term stun gun is a bit unclear because the Taser can be used in two modes, EMD (electro-muscular disruption) and drive stun. The former causes losss of muscle control while the late is just used to cause pain. The pain mode is rarely if ever supposed to be used on a handcuffed suspect. It is not clear from the article when he was "stunned". In a previous YOD case the officers violated the use of force policy by stunning the suspect multiple times after he was handcuffed and restrained and because they did not properly inspect the Taser darts and see that they had left part of the dart in the suspects back. The Taser is a useful tool but the supervisory officers need to review each use and make sure that the officers are following the departments use of force policy and training

trepass, it is important that officers be trained on each method of control and that this equipment is checked frequently. I wonder if city depts have enough resources to do that now. Thanks for your insightful post. And Mr Todd, Trepass said the Taser is a useful tool but should be monitored by supervisors. Do you disagree?

The stun gun is an effective non-lethal option for police. A lot of these criminals would have been shot with a firearm had it not been for pepper sprays, Tasers, and stun guns. http://www.phoenixstormdefense.com/

Point of order. Non-lethal is incorrect. The proper term is less-lethal. The difference is important
