Woman shot in head during robbery in stable condition

By Cole Bertsos

Update: Sketch released of suspect believed to have shot a woman in head

A 20-year-old Pittsfield Township woman was shot in the head during a robbery Friday night, according to the Pittsfield Department of Public Safety.

Pittsfield police officers responded to a call for a medical emergency around 10:35 p.m. on the 4900 block of Lakeridge Drive in Pittsfield Township and transported the victim to a nearby hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Pittsfield Township Deputy Police Chief Gordy Schick described the suspect as an 18- to 20-year-old black male, approximately 5-foot-8 with a thin build, no facial hair and a bald head. He was wearing a hoodie and all dark clothing. He is still at large and considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Schick said the woman had just gotten off work and was walking up to her apartment complex when an unknown suspect approached her with a gun and tried to grab her purse.

The suspect then put the gun to her head and told her to remove her clothing while forcing her to the ground. At that point, the victim began fighting back and the suspect then shot her in the left side of her head.

Schick said the suspect did have the intent to commit a sexual assault, but did not.

The victim remains in stable condition as of 9:20 a.m. on Saturday.

The Ann Arbor Police Department also responded to the scene with a K-9 unit, but were unable to track down the suspect after canvassing the area.

Schick also added the victim was wearing headphones, which he advised against at that time of night as a preventative measure.

Anyone having witnessed the incident or can provide more information is asked to call the Pittsfield Police Department at (734) 822-4911 or the confidential tip line at (734) 822-4958.

Upon reading "the news" in order to be informed I suppose, One would ponder the lack of info or a sketch of the suspect in any of these posted cases on a timely basis. Crowd sourcing if used correctly may solve stuff! Don't want to get innocents hurt ( I hear you,as well) There are nothing but eyes out here. There ought to be a way to utilize the combination with technology. It'd be nice if technology as well as onlookers could be actually used instead of the computer- for playtime and like this right-wing corporate paper for spreading propaganda. I believe the average cop is up there with any other civil servant and you should expect that caliber of service. So what is the level of service?? (were you wowed?? doubtful) C'mon people the cops need every last bit of help they can get, not a witchhunt for sure, but this instant technology(computer/Smart phone etc. IS NOT being used hardly at all. Go back to sleep now.

exactly WHAT in my original post was off limits? pittsfield council likes to spin the numbers. what's wrong with posting that? they did some blah blah a while back about how safe pittsfield was and not too long after there was a domestic violence event. and i'm pretty sure they had just awarded themselves pats on the backs and what not for lowering the domestic violence in pittsfield. this paper sure seems to tow the line for the "system" and no t so much the community. now pittsfield has another shooting (remember the one where the cop shot the guy after getting out the car? oh and don't forget... he "turned up dead" before the trial?). based on the pittsfield strategy of spin, their violent crime numebrs should be up about 200% at the moment. wait a week, i'm sure it'll go up. pretty much the same thing i said last time. condolences to the victim. I believe there was another attempted rape in the recent past, behind the bank/party store on the corner of Golfside and Clark. Ladies in that area, be very aware of your surroundings. Stay off your phones, IPods, have your keys in your hands so you are not distracted digging through your purse, and, if possible, walk with someone. Thankful the young lady is going to be okay and hope she can overcome the trauma.

More and more random violent street crime. These perps are all around this area, and originate from any of the cities and towns in SE MI, or even from other areas of MI. The problem is the revolving door in Washtenaw County of slaps on the wrist and throwing these thugs back into the community. I bet there are dozens, if not hundreds, of these thugs running around the communities with long rap sheets committing their thuggery. Toss them all in prison for a long time when caught, and NO BAIL when arrested. Unless the justice system gets tough on these perps, nothing will change.

Armed & Dangerous male roaming the city wanted for attempted murder. Where's our 9000 policeman and shut down of the city? I'm willing to bet this guy is more dangerous than the guy they've been chasing around Boston.

hermanp, who cares about the dog, a young woman was almost assaulted think before you respond. it makes you look cold .as you may well know by now, a lot of tax payers money is spent on less serious stuff. we need to capture this animal before he hurts another person. people are more important than MONEY ,WORD.

Most likely the perp will be from Ypsi or a neighboring community. He will have grown up at some point in a housing project or section 8 paid house. If those places didn't exist there the amount of crime in Ypsi would be minimal.

Sun, Apr 21, 2013 : 10:47 a.m.

My kids grew up in a housing project. While not perfect, they are not criminals. One graduated from UofM, and the other out of high school with an Associate's Degree. Both of them work and try to avoid the distractions that are prevalent all around them. No negative generalizations please of those who have less money than you.

Jay Thomas

Sun, Apr 21, 2013 : 2:23 a.m.

Yes, that was in reference to others pretending someone doing this had to come from Detroit. Nope! Right here... if not Ypsi then adjacent. Usually people coming from a family history of generational government dependency. Every year lots of victims in old Ypsi. I feel sorry especially for the young kids going to EMU who are raped, robbed and even killed.

umylulz

Sat, Apr 20, 2013 : 11:35 p.m.

Yeah, let's do away with section 8 housing. Let all of those people become homeless, because everyone knows homeless people don't commit crimes. :+/ By the by, you realize Ann Arbor is a "neighboring community" of Ypsi, right?

I demand that the age of the suspect and the words, "black male" and "hoodie" be removed from the article. It is proven that such words promote prejudice and profiling.

Some heat needs to be put on the owners of these large apartment complexes requiring them to provide good lighting and at least a modicum of security, or at least high-quality cameras so perps like this guy can be apprehended instead of left free to re-offend.

I would agree with the Detroit aspect of your comment but halt just a bit at the generalization of Ypsilanti or Ypsilanti Township. These communities have been impacted by migration of those with less than stellar criminal records out of Detroit, also.

YpsiGirl4Ever

Sat, Apr 20, 2013 : 2:58 p.m.

Glad to read the victim is recovering. Meanwhile a question has to be asked where exactly was this suspect from? Detroit maybe? As Detroit continues to decline its pushing more violent criminal activities like this one, towards our communities.

Washtenaw County has had problems with crime for years. Sadly, violent crime is nothing new here and it has nothing to do with Detroit. We aren't even a suburb of Detroit or part of the TriCounty area.

Jay Thomas

Why blame Detroit for this? I know of multiple people who have been the victim of perps from Ypsi in that general vicinity. A young athlete was gunned down by another ypsi perp next door at the shopping plaza.

Sadly we have in our "war on drugs" not only made the drug lords incredibly rich, but with our hundreds of billions spent on it filled the jails full up. There isn't room to keep the violent offenders. We have a larger portion of our citizens in jail than most any other country in the world and it costs us in many ways.

Macabre Sunset

Sat, Apr 20, 2013 : 6:42 p.m.

While I agree in part, remember that prosecutors often allow a plea to drug possession for those caught committing other crimes where the evidence is more circumstantial (like being in possession of stolen goods, but no one saw you break in). Drug possession is easy to prove.

Can we please stop the revolving door of justice....I will bet this criminal has priors. These judges need to quit releasing dangerous criminal back out on the streets. Just the other day, for instance, I saw where two thugs got released on 10% of a $2,000.00 bond for pistol whipping a mechanic because they didn't want to pay their bill. Everyday there are stories of crimes being committed even more serious than this. Enough already!

PIttsfield did not pay for YPD's dog. If you'd rather pay OT and wait for a response from someone who was most likely off duty, rather than enjoy the services of an on-duty dog/handler for free, I guess it's probably a good thing you're not in charge. I bet the victim was happy to have timeliness be more of a priority than politics.

Jon, You're right. Ypsilanti and Pittsfield Township began sharing a K-9 police patrol unit as part of a four-year partnership that started Jan. 1 of this year.
