Michigan receiver Jerald Robinson wanted after missing court appearance

By Kyle Feldscher

Note: This story has been updated with a statement from a Michigan spokesperson.

University of Michigan sophomore wide receiver Jerald Robinson is wanted by police after not appearing for a court hearing, court officials said.

Robinson is facing one charge of malicious destruction of property between $200 and $1,000, a misdemeanor offense, court records indicate. The charge stems from a Feb. 4 incident, and the warrant was issued on March 23, court records show.

Robinson missed an arraignment hearing on March 23, records indicate. A $2,000 cash or surety bond was set in his absence.

"This is all new information to us, and we can't really comment any further than that at this time," Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf said.

Robinson’s address in court documents was listed as his hometown of Canton, Ohio. The court typically sends notices to appear to the defendant's last known address.

Robinson has been practicing with the Wolverines throughout spring football and suffered a sprained ankle during last week’s spring game. He’s considered one of the prime contenders for a spot in the starting lineup when the season begins.

If convicted, Robinson faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.

I'd be willing to bet that if he read this article he'd be "Wait, what?" I've had several occasions where the court system hadn't updated my address, so any subpoenas or warnings or anything went to a completely wrong address. Then, you go to the DMV to renew your license and it's an "Oh, by the way, you've got a warrant out for this and that" (in my case it was a ticket that I was told I didn't have to pay)

This is a very poorly researched article. Take a look at the ESPN article. He missed his court appearance because the notice kept getting sent to incorrect addresses. Also, if he is wanted, then go arrest him. It does not seem like he is hiding or fleeing. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7832883/michigan-wolverines-jerald-robinson-facing-warrant-arrest

The law clearly states that it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that the court has your correct address.

"a2contarian", I don't believe University management is in denial about the problem. Having worked at UM for a few years, I've got some background in this subject. All they can do is attempt to manage the problem. As you point out the high profile men's sports have little to do with education at this point. A winning football team means prestige, donor money, etc. That's why the football coach at major schools like Michigan is the highest paid employee. A top program like Michigan has to take risks in order to remain competitive and keep the dollars rolling in to use on more meaningful projects. University management knows full well that some of these students (thugs?) are not up to admission standards and have questionable criminal backgrounds prior to enrollment. They know that most of these characters only want to use the school as a stepping stone to the NFL and have no intention of graduating on time ... or ever. Management can only attempt to mitigate the risks of having these characters on campus and in the news. They can only hope to filter out the most dangerous. The student-athletes with edgy backgrounds that end up on the team are monitored closely and regimented so that they are in class and kept busy and out of trouble. That's why when there is trouble, it's usually when the "guy" is back home. It's too bad these guys are so mentally immature that they require 24/7 oversight.

Young men, especially athletes, do stupid things because they feel entitled -- and it gets swept under the rug starting in high school. Our state champ hs team had a few guys who went out and smashed mailboxes and got caught drinking, but they were "reprimanded" with more lifting and conditioning and "suspension" from practice for a week before they were back on the team and "fully committed." That was 15 years ago, at the HS level. It's not because these kids are "thugs," but because they are allowed to remain immature and self-entitled. It sounds like JR withheld his arrest/court hearing from the coaches so that he could try and win a job. Pretty dumb. And since no one on here knows the ins and outs of it, it's simply trolling and fanatic back and forths. I would hope that people could find better enjoyment in their life, but I guess childish insults at fans of different schools makes people feel better. UM isn't perfect, nor are the ethics and morals of a program, or school, or any one person full proof. However, Hoke has done a good job with handling kids with both consideration for their future and for his programs. As a father figure, how many of you would kick your son out of your house if he messed up once? Or do you ground/suspend them? Hypotrolls, go back to your own teams. Or, get better lives and find something that is actually worth your one life's minutes.

Two wrongs don't make a right, bad situation not showing to coourt. I hope I don't read about an excusue of not having a ride to the courthouse, etc, etc. To Jerald Robinson: get your act together, sorry you have to learn the hard way.

It is always fun watching the U of M crowd stay in denial about their football team. Leaders and the best in some things, but not athlete behavior. My alma mater makes me sick quite a few times a year but I can admit it. Everyone should realize that athletics, especially the high profile men's sports, doesn't really have much to do with education and that the governing body, the NCAA, doesn't really do much with the powerhouses until the violations have really piled up and become apparent.

just kick him off the team. No room for this kind of garbage. There is plenty of more deserving people out there to take his place.

It seams UM is no. 1 in the B!G in convicts. When is Hoke going to be held accountable? Last in the B1G in academic APR and 1st in convicts. Quite the record there Hokey Pokey.

Meyer and Tressel both had over 30 convicts each in their tenures at Florida and Ohio. Looks like Ohio made the right choice in a coach. Keeping status quo, cash and tats flowing...pass the bong around ohio.

I don't know for sure, but I would've thought MSU was ranked number 1 in that metric. Is there any reliable, comprehensive data on this?

The football team need its own probation officer to keep track of these guys court dates and drive them so they don't drive on a suspended license (Stonum). It sounds like he might have a fairly large fine and restitution to pay. Be very careful that he pays it himself or we could be in big trouble with the NCAA again.

Driving them to court (or anywhere else) may be a violation of NCAA rules.

This definitely spells the end for Borges's short and shamefully plagued stint in AnnArbor. He was entrusted with looking after his offensive players and he could not even be bothered to see to it that this poor young man show up at his court date. The decision should be made at once before any other lives are ruined. shame on you Al Borges.

I have already received a very positive response and am expecting a stronger than expected turn-out. Many of the men on here have expressed concern of the assurance that their privacy will be protected. I can assure you that will be honored. We all have certain family arrangements that do not need to know what we do in our private time.

Lets hold off judgement here. 1) the article made it sound like there could have been a mix-up and the summons from court was sent to an address that JR did not reside at. 2) Michigan needs JR to step up in a real big way this year.

Mr Robinson has a small problem at this moment that needs to be fixed at this moment. Don't panic, don't run, be an adult which you are considered by the court and man up.
