Two large fights reported Sunday on the same block in Ypsilanti

By Kyle Feldscher

Two large fights early Sunday on the same block in Ypsilanti caused at least one person to suffer head injuries, according to police.

Ypsilanti police officers were sent at 1:52 a.m. and 2:37 a.m. Sunday to the 500 block of West Cross Street for reports of large fights.

In the first incident, police went to the area and found a person had been attacked by a group of four to eight people. The group fled the area after pedestrians intervened in the struggle and the suspects were gone by the time police arrived, officers stated.

One person suffered head injuries in the second incident after a group of five to 12 people chased another group, police reported. Further details on the person’s injuries was not immediately available Monday.

Information on whether the fights were related was not immediately available from Ypsilanti police Monday afternoon.

More Ypsi pride. I am a guy who was born at Beyer Hospital and spent his young life in Ypsi. Ypsi people always claim of the undeserved poor image they have, particularly from people in A2. Sorry. Some Ypsi folk will say, "It could have happened anywhere." So then, why emulate the idiots of the world? Why live up to the negative image you folks claim you do not have?

Malorie: If you claim it's all students that are causing the problems and it's the same as in Ann Arbor just consider the difference between UofM and EMU: literally anyone can get into EMU if you want to, while you have to pass several criteria and work pretty hard to get into UofM. That means you have less people willing to throw it all away by fighting / robbing, etc. in Ann Arbor. Since you compared students thought I'd throw that out there. And by the way, I get down on Ann Arbor all the time as well; too liberal, too many hippies, too many pretentious university people, etc. I don't want to give off the wrong vibe and I don't have anything against Ypsilanti, but I do make a conscious effort to stay away.

So I guess, all the residents of Ypsi should be chastised by you? I grew up in Newport (farming community in Monroe county) but moved to Ypsilanti a couple of years ago. I absolutely love this town! Preston Tucker? The old bomber plant? Ford Lake? EMU? There is so much history here. Yes, I would love to see some of the low income apartment buildings torn down, but most people I've met here, have been great people. My brother n law, is always telling me to move to Ann Arbor. I tell him, no thanks. People from A2 are all the same. I can go to the hardware store, talk with an old retired hillbilly from kentucky, next person I see, may be a foreign studying at Eastern. I believe Ypsi, has what Ann Arbor advertises...Diversity, ingenuity, and know how. Ann Arbor seems to be a group of cookie cutter stepford families! Come on back tracy! You'll be excepted back!

Why do people keep voting this down? It's true. But it's also true that when you have a town full of college kids gearing up for summer, alcohol-induced fighting is bound to happen. Same thing in a2. I don't think it's the bar fights that give Ypsi the reputation.

The number of criminal incidents in that general area makes it the worst place in Washtenaw County in my opinion. It just never stops. I feel sorry for the EMU students that have to live there.

Grove street has way more issues on a regular basis as well as the other areas mentioned.

Jay - at first I was offended by your statement, but then I realized the only logical explanation would be that you are confused about the location or haven't been here before. I've lived on the 300 block of West Cross for 3 years, and elsewhere in the neighborhood for 6. This is my favorite part of Ypsi and I have never had a serious problem with criminals in this area. It's people spreading rumors that makes Ypsi out to be such a bad place.

You must not get out much. Ever been to West Willow? Or the abandoned dump formerly known as Liberty Square? The 500 block of West Cross is Central Park West compared to West Willow, or MacArthur Blvd.

They did this on Mothers Day? I could understand if it were Fathers Day but not Mothers Day.

related to the stolen electronics and removed sliding door on the same night and in the same block?

That's not the same block =/ It's more likely related to the bar and two liquor stores on the block, where groups of people like to hang out on the sidewalk or in front of the stores.

Thanks passerbys for breaking this up the first time. If you have the ability to help out in this type of situation please do so, even if its just getting loud and letting these thugs know the police are coming and they are being watched. If we want Ypsi to be any safer we need to step up and watch out for each other since the YPD are overwhelmed.

I was still up and heard this go down on my scanner. They all need to be sent to war zones, if they truly want to fight.
