Two illegal immigrants in Washtenaw County arrested during nationwide crackdown

The arrests were two of more than 3,100 made across the country and 67 in Michigan during Operation Cross Check, according to ICE officials. Khaalid Walls, public affairs officer for the ICE office in Detroit, said the operation had an impact on safety by gathering up many criminals and fugitives.

“Targeted operations like Cross Check have an immediate and significant impact on public safety in our communities,” Walls said in a statement. “Operations like this one prove that a focused enforcement strategy is the best use of our resources.”

The six-day operation was the largest of its kind, according to ICE officials. Arrests were made in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, three U.S. territories and Washington D.C.

Among the 3,168 arrests, 2,834 people had previous criminal convictions including 1,063 people who had convictions for murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, terroristic threats, drug trafficking, child abuse, battery on a child, sexual crimes against minors and aggravated assault.
