Police release photos of man believed to have robbed 3 Ann Arbor businesses

By Kyle Feldscher

Investigators on Thursday confirmed their belief that the man who robbed an Ann Arbor Subway Wednesday is the same man who robbed a GameStop and Biggby Coffee earlier this year.

Detective Bill Stanford released a wanted poster Thursday afternoon showing security camera images of the suspect.

“This person is believed to be the same suspect who robbed GameStop … on April 30 … and Biggby Coffee … on May 2,” the poster stated.

Stanford said Thursday the man went into the Subway, 885 W. Eisenhower, at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday and showed a knife. He then demanded money and fled on foot.

It’s a similar crime to the GameStop and Biggby robberies, both of which happened during business hours when there were customers in the store. In both incidents, the man demanded cash while showing a knife to employees.

At the time, Stanford warned the public to be on the lookout for the man.

“He’s pretty desperate and dangerous,” Stanford told AnnArbor.com. “We need to get him off the streets.”

The man is described as black, 6-feet tall, with a light complexion. He wore a black ski mask, checkered shirt and dark pants during Wednesday’s robbery, according to police.

In the previous incidents, the man has worn black or gray hooded sweatshirts and black or gray pants. It’s estimated the man is approximately 25 years old.

Anyone who encounters the man is encouraged to be cautious. Tips can be sent to Stanford at 734-323-2628, the AAPD’s anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP (773-2587).

Hopefully his next hit is at a place where the owner has a little friend under the counter.

Shopkeepers around town oughta be polishing up those surveillance camera lenses. Some of those security systems allow the owner to zoom in/out but it's darned-near impossible to make those adjustments while the knife-wielding perp is standing at or behind the counter. With all of those customers sitting/standing around in the establishments this dude's stuck up, you'd think someone would have the presence of mind to shoot some video on their phone, surreptitiously. Heck, kids do it all the time! (and then post it on FB or Vines) A little more community involvement and we'll get this bozo...and nobody gets hurt. It'll take some nerve though...it's gotta be un-nerving to be present in a situation like that.

Let's please keep in mind: pictures like these are better than no pictures at all for police trying to ID a suspect.

Most security camera images are as poor as these. However, just about everyone carries phones with cameras. How hard would it be to subtly stand back and click away while letting "perp" think he is getting away with robbery then e-mail photo's to police? A camera doesn't need to be held in front of your face to be taking pics!

Next time you witness a robbery, Kathryn, you give it a try and let us know how it works out for you!

I'm waiting for this knife-wielding robber to try "upgrading" to a gun shop. :-) That black ski mask is all the "background check" they'll need to deny his demands. Or - he could just keep robbing and terrorizing those businesses which "wisely" don't allow customers or staff to be armed.

The problem is that these robberies occurred when customers were in the store during regular business hours. Brazen and very dangerous. Hope this thug is caught.

To all you camera critics, just exactly how good of an image do you expect to get from a person wearing a ski mask. Even if it was perfect you can't see the face. Now, if you see anyone wearing a ski mask this time of year, probably cause for concern.

Have you been outside today? It's pretty cool out there...just because someone is wearing a ski mask and wielding a knife doesn't mean they are bad...could be someone that is chilled and looking for a fresh off the grill steak...

After all these years , can't some one invent a decent affordable surveillance camera system??

Don't you worry, Kyle. I'm on it. If I see any headless, blurry mythical bigfoot-lookin'-like creatures wearing checkered shirts scampering around town, I'll alert Mr. Stanford - and a therapist - right away.

Wilco, bro. I'll sell the photos, you hit the big leagues with the story, and the first three rounds are on me.

Sounds good, Major. If you happen to see Bigfoot, call me before Stanford. I would love to break that story. Take a clear photo though or else people will only comment on the quality of the photo.

With images such as this, the reason I like to publish them, despite the lack of facial features, is the off chance someone in the public recognizes the man's clothing or figure. That can often trigger a tip to police that might help solve the case. Obviously, these photos aren't the best quality but they may lead to someone providing information to detectives. I think that helps.

Thanks for the pictures. His face is very well hidden. I guess he would be hard to spot by the body alone. At least it is something to go on. Someone knows him and recognizes him, too.
