A 34-year-old homeless man was arrested in Ann Arbor after breaking a bottle on the head of a man he thought was making romantic advances toward his girlfriend, police say.

Officers were called to East Ann Street and North Fourth Avenue at 5:42 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of an assault, Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said.

A 47-year-old Ann Arbor man and a 30-year-old woman who resides at the Delonis Center homeless shelter, were outside on the sidewalk, Bush said. The woman was waiting for her boyfriend to arrive with her cell phone charger.

When the 34-year-old man showed up, he saw the two together and became jealous, police said.

"(He) ran across the street and hit him with a bottle,” Bush said.

Witnesses said purple liquid showered over the victim when the bottle broke on his head, Bush added, but the police report did not specify what kind of bottle it was.

Police say the 34-year-old man also kicked the 47-year-old. The 34-year-old was arrested and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail. Charges of assault and battery could be pending, police said.

The 47-year-old man was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital for rib pain and a cut near his left ear. There was no more information to release about his condition Thursday morning.
