Police: Man attacked by 3 men as he walked along Hill Street Friday, sent to hospital
A man was sent to the hospital after being jumped by three unknown men and badly beaten in an unprovoked attack early Friday morning, according to Ann Arbor police.
Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety notified investigators at 3 a.m. Friday of an unconscious man in the 600 block of South Fifth Avenue. The man told U-M police he had been attacked earlier that night by three men as he walked westbound on Hill Street between Oakland Avenue and South State Street.
Bush said the man reported the men came out of nowhere as the man was walking back home and started punching and kicking him. The man told police he did not know who his attackers were and did not provoke them.
He suffered abrasions to his face, arms and chest and was transported by Huron Valley Ambulance to University of Michigan Hospital for treatment.
The first man was described as wearing a blue shirt and blue jeans. The second man was wearing a long-sleeve blue shirt and khaki shorts. The third man was wearing a green shirt, baggy blue jeans and had short hair.
The three men were described as being between the ages of 19 and 25 and were Hispanic, Bush said.
Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.

Drive around town and campus and watch how many people pay attention to their surroundings. They either have their eyes glued to their cell phones texting, or have ear phones on so they can't hear anything. Now, add into the mixture they do this at night as well as during the day. This is a criminals dream. People, get your head out of the sand and be aware. I have known several parolees who said this is how they picked their victims. It was/is easy pickings. One day these thugs are going to choose the wrong individual...perhaps an armed pedestrian willing and able to defend himself.

Right, because attackers always launch their assault from an honorable distance directly in front of you, to give fair warning and time to reach and aim your weapon. Face it, unless you are walking around with your gun drawn and pointed around every corner commando style, it's not likely to be a useful tool of defense. More often the attacked will be knocked to the ground before they ever knew anything was coming, and if they're carrying then the gun will soon be property of the attackers (and hopefully not used against the attacked right then and there). False comfort at best, and more likely to increase danger than protect. You'd be much better off training in close range martial arts.

Most likely a gang initiation. Very common in Champaign Illinois (U of Illinois). Always several on one, late at night. Victim's story is always questioned due to the randomness and lack of witnesses. Reluctance of the news media to publish because minority on white crime. Reluctance of the campus admin to publish because it will add to the serious crime reports. Reluctance of the campus police to categorize as serious crime because it will likely go unsolved and lower their performance statistics.

Happens annually. This is a type of gang initiation where an unsuspecting victim, typically white male student, is ambushed and "beat down" by assailants. Racially motivated to a certain extent. AA is a small town with some very big city problems that go unaddressed. Head-in-the sand politicians, that don't want to address the gang activity in AA and Ypsi.

I frequently walk the streets by myself and have never been molested. Ann Arbor is as safe as a city can realistically be.

I can remember reading about many of these incidents during the last school year. Students: don't walk alone at night or in the early morning hours on A2 streets. These thugs sit in cars and wait for bait. Lack of police patrolling is also part of the problem. Walk in groups and don't carry cash.

The shady portion of our city knows full well when the unsuspecting children pour in. This happens every year without fail, and this won't be the last time, either.

Far worse than shady, I'm sorry to say. These are thugs, professional criminals that need to be locked up for a long time.

More police on bikes in these areas at bar closing to 4am would seem appropriate. A lot of molestation and violence along these student corridors is taking place way too often.

Kyle, you should contact the victim's mother and see if you can get an unconfirmed account of who may have committed this crime. Perhaps...Students, or even Student Athletes.

I'm sure there will be no problem tracking these guys down as I bet they are firmly entrenched in the community with jobs that require proof of residence and addresses that reflect homeownership.
