Four men assaulted two employees from Rick’s American Cafe early Sunday morning after they attempted to stop a man who was stealing a trash can.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said a 19-year-old Ann Arbor man and a 22-year-old Ann Arbor man were disposing of trash in an alley in the 600 block of South Forest Avenue after the bar closed early Sunday morning. While they were getting rid of the trash, a man ran up and took a trash can.

The man ran away and the 19-year-old employee followed him. As the employee approached him, the man started punching him. The 22-year-old employee rushed to join in and help the 19-year-old but three other men suddenly appeared.

The three men knocked the 22-year-old to the ground and started punching him.

A nearby Ann Arbor police officer heard what was going on and went toward the area. The assailants took off into a parking structure.

The suspects are described as black men. The one who attempted to run away with the trash can was in his 20s, had a medium build, was wearing baggy shorts and had cornrows. The three other men were in their 20s and all four fled in a dark color Pontiac G6, a parking attendant told police.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.
