Police: 16-year-old accused of robbing and shooting man will be charged as adult

Bertel Franklin Gibbs was arraigned Wednesday on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, armed robbery and three counts of felony firearm.

"Due to the seriousness of the crimes, he has been charged as an adult," said a release from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office.

The 39-year-old Ypsilanti Township man told police he was walking through an apartment complex in the 1100 block of South Harris Road Monday night when Gibbs allegedly brandished a handgun and told the man to give him all his money.

Gibbs is accused of shooting the man in the leg after the man handed over his cash. Police would not disclose how much money was taken. Neither the man nor the suspect lived at the apartment complex but did know each other, police said.

The Ypsilanti Township man was taken to the hospital and treated for the gunshot wound. He has since been released.

Gibbs was given a $500,000 bond and is being held at the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center. No booking picture was immediately available because Gibbs was processed as a juvenile.
