Thief swipes electronics from Ann Arbor apartment as woman sleeps

By Kyle Feldscher

A 25-year old woman lost more than $800 worth of electronics when someone entered her Ann Arbor apartment through a sliding glass window that had been left open a crack for ventilation early Friday morning, police said.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said the woman returned to her apartment in the 1100 block of Nielsen Court at 3 a.m. and cracked the window before going to bed. She woke up at 1 p.m. and noticed a plant that had been on the ledge of the window was moved and dirt was on the desk immediately below, giving the impression it had fallen and been replaced.

The woman then noticed an Apple iPod Touch and an IBM Thinkpad laptop had been stolen, Bush said. The woman reported the break-in to police at 2 p.m. Friday.

There was no suspect information available Monday morning and police are still investigating the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.

One of the main reasons I moved from Ann Arbor to Canton (before moving out of State), people were always testing your windows and doors to see if they were locked. I suppose they could have been performing a public service or being neighborly ... not! By the time I got to the door or window they were gone. Never had that happen in Canton or my new city of residence. I almost think there is a hard-core group of B&E artists that work the AA area. Obviously the Mayor's office and AA police would say otherwise. Anyway, I'm glad I don't live in AA anymore.

Lock your doors and windows and use a fan for ventilation when you are asleep/away.

@jusrcurious, I have to agree with you 100% anything I might have said would have been deleted.

So why doesn't AA dot Com call this a "home invasion"? Oh - because it is in Ann Arbor...

We don't always print the proper name of a crime when there no formal charges involved in the story. In this case, there was no particular reason why I chose to not label this a home invasion in the story – I refer to the theft taking place because someone entered the home illegally. We cover a wide variety of crimes across the county and always do our best to keep an unbiased approach in every reports. Obviously there are differences in writing styles between all of us here at AnnArbor.com which may create the appearance of inconsistency but do we try to ensure that each report contains only factual information as it relates to the given incident. Hopefully this helps and thanks for reading!

So true. And running a story about an incident in Ypsilanti in a column right before this one where they do refer to the crime as a home invasion puts this bias in the spotlight.

Too bad people have to put their homes in "lock down mode" because others don't know right from wrong.

Wrong, if they didn't know right from wrong they would be legally insane and not responsible for their actions. These cretins certainly DO know right from wrong. They just don't give a damn about your rights.

Let us not just demonize the petty street criminal. Many CEOs, politicians, and your fellow cubicle farm workers don't know right from wrong either.

I'm sorry she lost her belongings this way. Best to keep the doors locked.
