More than $100,000 in jewelry stolen during break-in, Ann Arbor police say

By Lee Higgins

A burglar or burglars swiped more than $100,000 worth of jewelry, silverware and other items Monday from a Shadford Road home, an Ann Arbor police report said.

Someone climbed up a ladder, pried open a screen to a second-floor window, then ransacked the home, a police report said.

The residents, a married couple in their 50s, told police the incident occurred between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

A handyman left the ladder at the home, the report said. Damage to cabinets, drawers and the screen was estimated at $1,000, according to the report.

Some of the items taken were family heirlooms. The report did not contain a breakdown of everything reported stolen.

Shadford Road is north of East Stadium Boulevard, east of Packard Street and south of Burns Park.

Anyone with information can call the police department’s tip line at (734) 794-6939.

The police never recommend giving out the dollar amount of what was taken in a break-in. Good going News! You probably gave the thieves a heads-up for the future!

Most burglaries are during the day. When are most people not at home??? When they are at work. Not many B&E's happen at night while people are asleep in their beds.

How did the burglar know no one was home, and commit a dangerous daytime burglary with a very high chance of being caught or seen? Odd story to say the least...

This is why it's VERY important to document everything of value you own (using pictures or video, and receipts) so that if you have to make an insurance claim, you have proof of your loss. It'll make it much faster and easier in settling your insurance claim. But, in general, I think a security system will eliminate most of the break-ins of this type. Most of these type of crimes in this area appear to be done by relative amateurs.

$100,000 insurance claim? I can't help wondering if there's going to be an interesting back story to this one.

Yikes! Hard to guess whether this was a well planned burglary, or a less orchestrated crime of opportunity when the burglar spotted the ladder. I'm sorry to hear about the loss - insurance can only compensate so much when it comes to family heirlooms. I hate the though of this jewelry being sold to cashforgold.com at scrap metal prices, but I can't help but wonder if that's where a lot of this stuff ends up these days. I had an alarm company out last week, and the installers should be here in a few days. Stories like this help reassure me that this was a wise choice.
