Suspect tries to hide from police in apartment, but resident tosses him out

By John Counts

A 37-year-old Ypsilanti Township man who ran from police because he had a suspended license could now face much more serious charges of fleeing and eluding police and home invasion.

The man was pulled over by deputies from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office at noon Wednesday in Ypsilanti Township for a minor traffic violation, Sgt. Geoffrey Fox said.

The man initially pulled the vehicle into a parking spot near Huron River Drive and Spinnaker Way.

“As the deputy approached him, he went over the curb and onto the grass,” Fox said.

The man raced through the Ford Lake Landings apartment complex before abruptly bringing the vehicle to a halt. He then got out and fled on foot. Deputies lost sight of the driver, but followed his progress thanks to tips from residents in the complex.

“(The deputies) heard some hooting and hollering; yelling and screaming,” Fox said.

The man attempted to enter an occupied apartment but was tossed out by the man who lived there.

“He snatched him up and threw him out,” said Fox.

Deputies caught the driver and he was arrested without further incident. He was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail and is expected to be arraigned Thursday morning. His name and booking photo have not been released pending arraignment.
