Man stopped by troopers in Sylvan Township indicted on federal drug charge

By Lee Higgins

A man who authorities say admitted trafficking heroin through Washtenaw County on the way to Detroit before being stopped by state troopers in Sylvan Township in November was indicted Tuesday on a federal drug charge.

Demetrius Sciplin, 40, of the Chicago area, is charged with possession with intent to distribute an amount of heroin, federal court records say.

ATF agents said Sciplin had a quantity of heroin in his vehicle on Nov. 2 on I-94 in Sylvan Township when he was stopped by a state trooper who said he was following too close to another vehicle, documents show.

Sciplin, who was initially charged in a criminal complaint, acknowledged being paid cash to transport heroin weekly to Detroit for about two months, records say. He is out on a $10,000 unsecured bond.

Sciplin is scheduled to return to court Thursday.

Well, people.. the way this works is: Speed limits are set artificially low so that the average driver violates the speed limit by several miles per hour. This way police have probable cause to pull over any person on the highway if they fit the drug running profile. If you are a single male driving the speed limit, you are suspect and pulled over for driving suspiciously slow. If you speed and fit the profile you are pulled over for speeding. Isn't it nice living in a police state where anyone can be pulled over, their car ransacked and placed into custody simply because they fit a profile?

Why do I keep reading about ATF involved in drug busts ? Is this not the DEAs job? Do we really need both doing the same job???
