Man pulls knife on University of Michigan student, attempts to rob him

By Lee Higgins

A man pulled a knife on a University of Michigan student early this morning at a bus stop near the Intramural Sports Building and attempted to rob him, a university police crime alert said.

The student was sitting at the bus stop in the 600 block of East Hoover Avenue about 1 a.m. when a man approached and demanded money, the alert said.

When the student refused to hand any over, police said the man took out a pocket knife. The student fled the area and reported the incident about 30 minutes later.

The man with the knife was described as white; 20 to 22 years of age; 5 feet, 7 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall; with a muscular build and short blondish-red hair, the alert said. He was clean shaven and was wearing a white T-shirt and khaki shorts.

Anyone with information can call university police at (734) 763-1131.

Maybe we need to be like Crocodile' Dundee, carry a bigger knife! Protect yourselves!

Another attempted armed robbery in A2. These thugs don't get caught; they just keep creating mayhem, crimes and damage in the area. UM and A2 are targets. Be careful out there. Anyone alone at a bus stop at 1 a.m. these days is taking a chance, unfortunately. Years ago it was possible to walk around safely at night in town, but no longer.

Yes, the last bus from Crisler Arena reaches that spot a few minutes after 1:00 a.m. going toward central and north campus.

To bad the victim couldn't have kicked the knife out of the suspects hand, or somewhere else.

Waiting for a bus at 1 a.m.? I don't think so.

As a student who has caught the Commuter North bus at 1:00am on a weeknight, I respectfully disagree with your opinion.

The UofM Commuter bus that serves the bus stop in front of the IM Building on Hoover (where this attempted robbery happened) runs until 1:30am on weekdays. It seems entirely possible that someone was actually waiting for a bus at the bus stop.

I'm sorry for the victim but unfortunately, the administration of the city and the U have designated you and your fellows as 'prey'. The predators have responded accordingly.
