A 29-year-old man is dead after Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies say his handgun accidentally discharged in his car Sunday night in Ypsilanti Township.

The man suffered a single gunshot wound to the head at about 10 p.m. in the 1200 block of Hull Street and died at the scene, sheriff's department spokesman Derrick Jackson said.

The victim's girlfriend and a male friend were in the car during the incident, Jackson said. One of them called 911, deputies said.

Jackson said it appears the man was holding the gun when it discharged, but detectives continue to investigate. The man is originally from Ann Arbor, but recently had been living out of state, Jackson said.

Deputies say he was in the area visiting friends.

The victim's name has not been released. Jackson said he had no more detail about the circumstances of the shooting.
