Man charged in Ypsilanti Township gun assault case

By Kelly Davenport

Updated with comments from the suspect.

A 33-year-old Detroit man has been arraigned on a felony weapons charge following a Jan. 13 assault at Bryn Mawr Apartments in Ypsilanti Township.

David Anthony Cameron is charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 15. His bond was set at $7,500.

According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department, a man walked into an office at the Bryn Mawr Lane complex at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 13 while a woman was in another room.

When the woman went into the office, the man pointed a black handgun in her face and told her to "leave my people alone," deputies said. According to a sheriff's department media summary, the man shoved her into a wall, pulled her hair and pushed her to the ground before running away.

The woman suffered injuries to her face and her head, but refused medical attention, deputies said. It's unclear what prompted the attack.

Cameron called AnnArbor.com on Monday and said the police summary did not reflect all the facts. He urged readers not to draw conclusions before the court process has a chance to run its course. "I will be vindicated," he said.

demetria, Without comment on this "incident". I do hope that this person is as you state. That being said, he does have some "mistakes" in his past that would counter the image you portray. I suppose the best we can ask for is that he gets his day in court.

Brosz, First my condolences and wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm glad that you were fortunate enough to escape serious injury. If I may? Last time we had an unfortunate person comment on their own crime, I asked these same questions. I think it will beneficial for all and unfortunately we never come by these after action reports otherwise. If you are able could you let us know what if anything you've learned from this? And what were your views on the Police, personal protection etc? For example, did you feel that whatever the situation that 911 would resolve it? Are you doing anything differently to ensure this can't happen to you again? Forgive me if this is still too raw, but this can be very educational for us to prevent it from happening to us as well.

As the victim, I am also, very disappointed with the bond set. Thank you Ricbrnr, eye on the news, peter and Jimmy for trying to put a different spin on things for me.

"one count of assault with a dangerous weapon" = $7500 bond. What a joke. Did they find the firearm with the person when he was arrested? Was it properly registered? Did he take the safety course and pay through the nose for a CPL? I guess the answers are no, so he gets a paltry bond because he's a nice guy.

Glad to hear the police caught this guy but I'm very disappointed that the bond was set so low. Would like to know who the judge is that gave him such a low bond and if this is standard for the crime.

Hmmm all disqualifiers for legal possesion of a firearm. Gun laws detering criminals = fail Let's see if those same laws do anything to ensure a long incarceration. Not holding my breath on that one...
