An unknown suspect approached a student who was walking about 2 a.m. near the West Hall Arch, 1085 S. University Ave., U-M police said in a crime alert sent out Friday morning. The suspect tried to take the man’s wallet twice and threatened to shoot him, according to police.

No weapon was actually seen, police said.

When the student refused to hand over his wallet, the suspect punched him in the face. That’s when the group of other men intervened, pulling the suspect away from the victim, who then fled the scene. The suspect also managed to get away, police said.

The suspect is described as a black man in his mid 20s, 6-feet tall with a slim build. He was wearing a gray long-sleeved baggy jacket, dark cargo-style pants and a gray beanie cap.

Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to call the University of Michigan Police Department at 734-763-1131.

Why does the person have to be from Ypsilanti or Detroit?

I'm glad to read that there are still good people out here in this world :)

Can we ever get an arrest of one of these thugs? Ann Arbor and U of M seem content to take crime reports and file those reports in a cabinet somewhere to never be seen again. Then they go about the business of harassing regular citizens and students by issuing tickets for noise violations, minor in possession etc, in their desire to generate revenues through fines. The real criminals never seem to get caught. Meanwhile about a third of students get their computer stolen also at some point during their stay at the university.

Unless its a stolen bike or a drunken fight these cops are useless. If they don't stumble upon something happening it's not getting solved. IE: Huge number of sexual assaults, med student murder where they are interviewing random criminals because they have nothing, etc.

Look, Thynkin, when criminals flee unless someone gets a license plate of follows them there is a good chance of them getting away unidentified. Here, the police did not even know this happened until the victim crossed the diag and called. If there were only five minutes just imagine how far one could get from a scene in five minutes.

Those computers pay some bills for folks in the housing projects.

Unlike noisy, drunk students, thieves don't tend to advertise their whereabouts to the entire neighborhood, thereby facilitating easy citation.

Still wonder why people like Zimmerman react the way they do?

@clown: It could be that the young man didn't enter by a normal route to that gated community, instead hopping a fence around back, and was seen looking in windows. Also, the young man turned around and walked back a ways to confront the neighborhood watch guy.

I still do wonder why people "like zimmerman" follow a young man in the dark for no reason then break every rule of neighborhood watch programs and the rules taught in concealed carry classes to create a situation that leads to the death of a young man that was doing nothing wrong until he was confronted by an armed stranger in the dark. So, yes, I still wonder what makes a young black man "suspicious" for walking in his dads apartment complex. Because a young black man on a college campus in Michigan did something wrong?

Can we please, pretty please, ban commenters for bringing up this stupid topic for the rest of time. Not everything has to do with the Zimmerman trial.

The people who heard the case tried disagree, and their opinions were the ones that matter. BTW, the point you are oblivious to is that this is another situation perpetuating a negative stereotype that leads to such reactions on the part of the victims. Try again eagleboy.

Zimmerman provoked the situation. This person did not. Try again, Matt.

Same piece of trash that attempted to rob another student with a BB gun recently? Too bad they didn't break his neck.

Clarify please on the victim who fled. Did he later alert police and report the incident, and thus is known? We should not have to assume he did but if he didn't, how would you know he is a student? Maybe he just fled a little way?

Mick - According to police, the victim reported it when he got to the other side of campus.

WOW, Awesome...and no, they didn't even need a gun! So much for the NRA saying only good guys with guns can stop crime!

Sue

if he had pulled a gun, the good guys would have needed a gun to stop him. If more good guys carried guns, less bad guys would get away with murder.

Obviously a false report. Shame, Kyle, you know very well that gun crimes cannot occur in gun free zones. ;-)

It's only gun free for the good people who need the protection. :-) The criminals missed the memo on that one.

It really doesn't matter. You can be killed more quickly if there is one than you can verify there isn't one...
