Ann Arbor firefighters carry a ladder back to their truck after they were called to the Parthenon Restaurant on Main Street for a kitchen fire on Tuesday.

Ben Curtis, the property manager, said he was working at another building down the street and ran to the restaurant at 3:15 p.m. after a grease fire broke out and flames shot through part of the roof.

Curtis and one of his workers used fire extinguishers to knock down the flames before firefighters arrived and finished the job, he said.

Ann Arbor Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Cook said a kitchen hood fire suppression system helped keep the fire under control. Cook estimated damage at $15, 000 to $20,000, depending on the value of food that has to be thrown out.

Curtis expects the restaurant to reopen tonight.

The fire tied up traffic at the intersection of South Main and Liberty street for about 20 minutes.

"A fire broke out this afternoon in the kitchen of the Parthenon Restaurant on South Main Street in downtown Ann Arbor Tuesday afternoon, but it was quickly extinguished, fire officials said." Lee, I think that first sentence could use a little editing. Was it this afternoon or Tuesday afternoon?

The fire occurred Tuesday afternoon, the day the story was posted. The extraneous time element reference, inserted accidentally during editing, has been removed.

Sounds like everyone and everything worked properly: the fire suppression system was in proper working order and contained the fire, employees knew what to do and acted, and the fire department showed up promptly and made sure the fire was completely out. What more could we ask for? Well done all 'round.

Great job by all who contained the fire within the kitchen. I am totally amazed at the mean-spirited comments by some -- be grateful that the fire was contained and we did not have a tragic incident like we did in Ypsilanti many, many years ago with a loss of many building due to a major fire -- to all of you who continue to put the AAFD down, again I say if it is your house that is on fire, you would want the best and in a timely fashion. If it were you or a loved one in need of immediate medical attention, you would want the best and in a time fashion --- the AAFD. Those of you who don't like where the article was put in the newspaper, oh well. Kick back a little, relax and enjoy the beauty that life has to offer. Way to go blue.

Maybe some people should learn to skip over commentors that annoy them or even better utilize the technology available to you to ignore them completely. Not that it would be common for Arborites to ignore contrasting information and/or stick their heads in the sand....Food for thought.

Carole... Thanks for your positive and uplifting comments. The biggest problem I tend to have with this site is how, even during a simple story about how quickly a fire was put out, so many people continue to write cynical comments. While I understand the need to voice one's opinion, the continued cynicsm displayed in many of these comments (especially when they are about local government) grates on the rest of us after awhile. Not every story is a pulpit from which to preach an annoyance with the government or spout sarcasm. Long story, short.... Thanks Carole, for the kind words. I was sitting accross the street at Starbucks watching the fire take place and was impressed with the speed with which emergency crews reacted and resolved the situation. Thank you to all of our emergency workers!

"Those of you who don't like where the article was put in the newspaper, oh well. Kick back a little, relax and enjoy the beauty that life has to offer." Thanks but no. There is a pattern of poor, reporting, editing and just general lack of direction on this blog. Without feedback how do you ever expect them to improve?

Is aa.com speculating arson or perhaps insurance fraud? Why else is this in the CRIME section?

In a sea of misguided anger on these pages, this is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time.

Was everybody out? If so defensive strategy is what the mayor prefers right? Stand outside and contain. No offensive searches for people or knocking down the fire from the inside...

What cause would that be? Resistance to staffing cuts that would mandate a "surround and drown" strategy?
