Dundee man arraigned on weapons charge after death of boy

By Kyle Feldscher

A 30-year-old Dundee man is charged with a misdemeanor after a 3-and-a-half-year-old boy shot himself in the head with the unsecured gun and died Sunday, according to a report in the Detroit News.

Joshua Greenhill, 30, was arraigned Monday in the 1st District Court in Monroe on a charge of careless discharge of a firearm causing injury or death, according to the report. The offense carries up to two years in jail.

Damon Holbrook died Sunday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the report. The Associated Press reports Damon found Greenhill’s gun in a portable case on the floor of a bedroom closet.

The child picked up the gun and shot himself in the head, according to the Associated Press. Five other people were in the home, including Damon’s father, according to the AP.

Greenhill is free on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond, according to the News. He has a concealed pistol license, which he was forced to surrender as part of his bond.

The NRA told me guns don't kill. Such a sad story! Please, please, secure your weapons!!

A former friend bought a semi-automatic pistol and kept it loaded and in-battery in bedside table drawer. He had little kids. Said he bought it for "home protection" and had Never gone to the Range to learn how to fire it. I tried to coach him about the Responsibility of possessing a loaded semi in the home that was in-battery, but he was Too Dumb to "get it." After that our friendship ended. Pray for his family . . .

I'm sure he is very, very sorry. Also, he is being punished with a misdemeanor so he has paid th price. Moderator, are you ok with this post?

The NRA is such an honorable organization. Nothing but fruit of the earth lovers of AK-47 assault weapons.

NO the NRA is NOT OK with this. And in fact has tried to get simple preventative lessons into schools for years. The NRA and their Eddie Eagle program is the number 1 reason incidents like this have steadily fallen to the lowest numbers in years. Even as gun ownership has increased. http://www.annarbor.com/community/news/opinion/school_gun_safety_classes_proposed_finally_reasonable_logical_gun_legislation/ I posted this in the opinion pages over 2 years ago. Where did that common sense, save the children legislation go? NOWHERE! Ask why...

How about the NRA, are they ok with this as well? They claim to promote gun safety, but somehow safety falls through the cracks much too often, usually with children. The little boy paid the price here, GreenMan.

Charged with a misdemeanor and released on bond? What a joke! That's a far cry from the original article that stated "Police Chief David Uhl said a 30-year-old man living in the home with the victim's father was arrested on a charge of manslaughter with gross negligence." What gives?

My thought exactly. Thoughts and prayers to the little boy's family.

Was the gun owner related to the boy?

From the Detroit News article linked above: "[Dundee Police Sgt. Tom] Redmond said the man who was arrested was a family friend living at the home of the victim's father."
