One of the three men accused of holding up a cab driver in Ypsilanti Township pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of armed robbery in the Washtenaw County Trial Court.

Twenty-two-year-old William McCray, of Detroit, took a plea deal offered by the prosecutor's office. McCray pleaded guilty to the first count of armed robbery in exchange for the dismissal of a second county of armed robbery and two counts of unarmed robbery.

Assistant Washtenaw County Prosecuting Brenda Taylor said a habitual offender status also would be dismissed.

A sentencing agreement was not part of the plea deal.

When Judge Darlene O'Brien asked McCray what he did that made him think he was guilty of the charge, he replied: "Robbed a cab driver."

Police said McCray, along with Samuel McCray, 17 and Richard Winston, 17, assaulted a cab driver and took cash and a cellphone after being picked up at 6:15 p.m. Dec. 26 in the 800 block of George Place in Ypsilanti Township.

McCray remains in the Washtenaw County Jail where he is being held with no bond.

And why did we abolish hard labor and the death penalty? Cruel and unusual punishment is now the acceptable rule for the law abiding victims' crime. Don't leave home without it!

So all the charges were dropped except for one and 'habitual offender status' is dropped too. Maybe I should invite the PA staff over to play poker some afternoon. Sound like tough negotiators. Lol.

Too bad the "habitual offender" status was dropped. Only 22 years old and apparently already in career criminal territory. Buh-bye!

The real problem is that the 22-year old pleaded guilty to the crime, which leads me to believe that the two 17-year old's will both be found guilty of similar crimes. Then they'll be charged as juveniles and be given what? 6 months in detention before they're released on their 18th birthday? For assault and armed robbery. This isn't how the system is supposed to work. Do the crime, do the time. Not: do the crime, do as little time as we can rationalize.

"A sentencing agreement was not part of the plea deal." Well that's a positive at least...still not happy about letting him slide on his recidivism...
