Deputies arrest two men shortly after sewer grate theft in Scio Township

By Lee Higgins

Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies say two men were arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing a metal sewer grate outside a Scio Township grocery store and attempting to sell it to a nearby scrap yard.

At about noon Thursday, Deputy Joe Crova responded to a Meijer on Jackson Road to meet with someone who saw a man steal a metal sewer grate, sheriff's department spokesman Derrick Jackson said.

Crova suspected the man may attempt to sell it to a scrap yard, Jackson said. Crova stopped by Razorback Metals down the road, where he found two men involved in the theft and arrested them with assistance from other deputies, Jackson said.

Crova recovered the sewer grate and three other stolen items that deputies believe the men were interested in selling to the scrap yard, Jackson said. A woman who was with the men was taken into custody on outstanding warrants, Jackson said.

Charges are pending.

I am grate-ful that Deputy Crova was able to act so quickly in this case! Seriously, I live near the Meijers in question, and would hate to have a wheel (bicycle, motorcycle, or car) fall into a de-grated storm drain....

This a vaery rare occaision that you will hear me say this... But we need stricter laws. Against people who steal scrap metal. The reason being, that people who steal scrap metal often destroy homes, property values, and entire neighborhoods for a small amount of scrap. I've seen nice houses that are now worthless because some scrapper has hacked apart the copper wiring and plumbing just for a couple hundred bucks. Literally $30,000 worth of damage for the sake of stealing $300 worth of copper.

Wha??? Is this a thing? Wouldn't the person buying it look at it and say "Um, did you just take this from the road?"
