Surveillance video being reviewed in investigation of Five Guys burglaries

By Lee Higgins

Ann Arbor police are reviewing surveillance footage as they work with metro Detroit authorities in an investigation into five burglaries at Five Guys restaurants Monday night, including the restaurant on South State Street.

Other Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurants targeted were in Canton, Detroit, Livonia and Woodhaven, Ann Arbor police Det. Sgt. Brian Jatczak said.

Jatczak said a person entered the restaurant on South State Street at 1:20 a.m. Monday and stole cash from a drawer. The burglar, who appears to be a man, was inside for 10 minutes, he said. A manager noticed the money was missing at 8 a.m. when she arrived at the restaurant to get ready for the day, he said. She told police that she believes the restaurant had been locked overnight, Jatczak said. However, police did not find signs of forced entry, he said.

Jatczak said he did not have details on how much money was taken during the break-ins.

Maybe it was the five fresh ingredients that lured the 5 burglars into the Five Guys restaurants Monday night (Monday being the first day in a standard five day work week).

Five spots hit in one night? Sounds like an inside job, or a disgruntled group of ex-employees, perhaps?

My thoughts exactly

Yeah... no signs of forced entry and a bunch of the same places. Maybe someone found a district manager's keys laying around somewhere.

For clarity from Detroit Free Press: Money-hungry thieves broke into several Five Guys Burger and Fries joints across metro Detroit on Monday, jimmying door locks and emptying safes, according to an Ann Arbor police report. The police report did not say which restaurants were hit in the crime spree, only that five stores in the metro Detroit area had been targeted in overnight break-ins, including the Ann Arbor store on South State Street. Detroit police officials said that at about 6 a.m. Monday, a delivery driver arrived at the restaurant and found the door open. The safe had been burglarized and an undisclosed amount of money was missing from the safe. About 90 minutes later, Ann Arbor police received a call about a similar incident at the Ann Arbor Five Guys, where a manager discovered the safe had been broken into. An undisclosed amount of money was missing.
